Hi Guys,

I just bought a used Custom 1911 that says "Custom by Toma" on the slide...anybody know who this is?

It seems to me I once heard of a shop in Edmonton (or somewhere) called Toma Guncraft but I can't find a single reference to this either by searching here or globally with Google.

Just interested...thanks for any tips you may be able to offer - Jeff/1911.

I think it might be from Mike Toma?? I used to work at Brink's in Edmonton with him in the mid 90's. He went on to do some gunsmithing and I think ran into some health issue's............

I also think it could be Mike Toma from Edmonton. I have used his services before and found them to be top end. I know how to get ahold of Mike. PM me your contact info and I will pass it along.

Mike Toma

Wow... out of the past... Mike Toma was From Africa and a damn good
smithy...He worked at the first Firing Line in Edmonton for a while and liked
to trick up Colt 45 ACP. Is he still around??
I started the Firing Line chain in 1985

Ricky,

That's great information...:) I was a member of the Firing Line in Winnnipeg in the late eighties, then in the early to mid nineties once I moved to Edmonton.

I'll post some pictures of my gun here, later tonight.

Best wishes, Jeff/1911.

Here it is...note the engraving on the slide. I don't know who KJ (see picture four) is, but it now stands for:

(Bowling Pin) Killer Jeff :)

This is picture four - there is a K J engraved in the slide above the thumb safety here...

Mike Toma is still a gunsmith, he does work for the Phoenix range in Edmonton right now.

He built two 1911s for me in the 90s, I still have one and its still a great gun!

Mike was also a strong IPSC shooter, and for some reason I thought he represented Canada at a world shoot in the 80s in Florida, but I could be wrong. Rick Clements was also on that team along with Murray Gardner and I believe Randy Fisher too......

Cheers

Yo Jeff...nice to meet cha... great looking old timer IPSC rig...
brings back lots of memories...thanks...Still gotta love a Colt 45.

Winnipeg Firing line was managed by Rick Yates and Jeff McLeod...
unfortunately they would rather shoot and party than do business so
it did not end well.

When Gord Davage was murdered in Edmonton it took the wind out of my sails
for a few years. Happliy back into shooting...good luck with your Toma Special.

Ricky,

Yes, Gordie's Murder sure was a sad event. He was a great fellow...what a terrible shame.

Great to talk to you too. I really like the Vintage IPSC style of this gun. Thanks again to all for your help with my question.

Best wishes, Jeff.

Very nice gun.
The name caught my attention since close to the Mexican border here, "Toma" is usualy a rude spanish expression accompanied by an extended middle finger.;)

I recall an older man behind the counter in the Edmonton Firing Line. He looked about 60 yrs of age. I can't for the life of me remember his name. He swore like a Russian drill sergent and always liked to insult everyone around him for being a candy ass. I liked him a lot. Anyone remember him? He sold me my first handgun, a SIG P220.
