Garand Help part 2: The Plot Thickens

For best results with the gauges, the bolt should be stripped. Thumb pressure as the bolt closes, so you can feel the gauge. The bolt should close cleanly on the Go. If you can feel the bolt on the No Go, that's OK. Of course it should not close on the Field.

I was actually planning on going to have an m14 barrel indexed. Things came up and I dont think I can make it now.

Last night I found the barrel appears to be over indexed by a couple degrees at least. I'm currently deciding whether to send it back and get my old rifle back. I dont want to do that, but everything that could have gone wrong with this build did.

I still have some great gun nutz who have offered to help as well as a gunsmith quite. I could just stit on it until I have an opportunity to fix everything because it all appears to be salvageable.

If you are anywhere into it for close to $2k, return it and get another one that isn't cobbled together by an amateur.

I've contacted the seller with some options on how to proceed. I've asked to either return the rifle or have him cover the gunsmithing bill. After finding out last night he barrel was over torqued by least a couple degrees that sealed the deal for me.

He is currently just deciding which of the options I gave he would like to take. Turns out, despite the condition of the rifle, the seller seems to be a stand up guy and willing to work it out.

Thank you everyone for all of your help and knowledge. This was quite the learning experience.

100% return it. Why start gunsmithing something with a bunch of bad juju associated with it?

Start fresh. There should only be one option given - a refund, please and thanks.

As a side note.... I can and do assemble Garand rifles as well.

The cost, all in should be around $1950 for a properly assembled Garand with a new Criterion barrel and a new Boyd’s stock set.

Add taxes and shipping to the above.

Once I get my rifle back it will be up for sale or trade and guess what I'll be looking to replace it with...

My next one will definitely be built by a professional. Heck, this one was originally valued at $1800 in the ad before bumping it down to $1700.
