Rimfire Optics Overkill?

no such thing as overkill on a scope. depending on what you want to shoot will dictate how much money you will need to invest in the optics to get the most out of your ammo
 
For a hunting rifle, 3-9x40 is often enough. For target work it often gets more expensive, with much higher magnification and adjustable parallax correction becoming relevant factors.
Much depends on the intended use for your new rifle.
 
I have a 4x16 on my CZ 455 in 22LR. I like the high magnification to see the holes in the paper clearly from 100 yards or more.

Which model of Anschutz are you buying? And what is the purpose of the rifle? That will help determine the nature of the scope. For example, if you will only shoot at the range at 50 to 100 yards, more magnification rather than less would be in order. If you are mostly hunting with your rifle, as Chilly807 says a 3-9 is often suitable. The 4-16x50 can be a compromise for target shooting and hunting but the objective size of 50mm means that higher scope rings will be needed than if it were a 40 or 42mm size.
 
I have a Hawke eclipse in 6-24x50 with side focus on a NS522. I also have a Bushnell 5-15x40AO on my Ruger Dlask Arms 10/22 with 21” Lilja barrel which is my 200 yd plinker. I think I’m going to switch them around as I feel the higher magnification will be better for the Ruger. I shoot 100m with the NS522 and 15x would be more than enough to even spot small targets

Just make sure that you have adjustable parallax... Sightron S2 6-24 target dot on my old single shot Anschutz set to bench shoot 50 yard groups. 2-7, 3-9, 4-12 are usually hunting scopes with duplex or bdc reticles

I have found that 3x9x40 is more then enough scope for hunting and target shooting a .22 I also don't make any attempts at stretching the .22 past 100yrds.
