If rifles and ammo were reintroduced who would buy one?

30 gr hollowpoint at 2400fps id be in for sure.

I heard rumors that savage and agulia had something in the works but no proof of fact. Just hopes for now

Nope... download a Hornet or .223 for that performance level.

Mmm hmm.

And you can reload them. Only benefit of the rim fire I can imagine is higher msg capacity in a semi.

That puts it over the 400ftlbs for small game during open seasons for big game. The 5mm remains legal if im hunting small game in areas where big game overlap. Id rather not buy a big game tag if i have no plans to hunt them

A problem not faced by any of us not living in Southern Ontario.

Hell, I won't even buy 22 Mag ammo. 5mm was orphaned once already, so I kinda doubt it'll exactly get up and run, this time around. Seeing lots of Winchester Super Magnum ammo out that way? Not seeing any where I been. Which tells me the market penetration there, even with the benefit of being the new hot thing, supposedly.

Sooner reload a Hornet.

Would only consider buying a 5mm rimfire rifle as a donor for a rebarrel. And only if cheap enough to justify the added costs and time involved.

Hmmm. So this is interesting. I expect you’re referring to page 24 in your Ontario hunting summary “firearm restrictions”. Specifically, the note at the bottom:

Seems clear enough, but I’ve continually been led astray by the Summary, so have taken to always checking it against the actual regs to be sure.

Have a look yourself, but I can only find ONE mention of any rule regarding 400ftlbs, and it’s specific to WMU7A.

From “ONTARIO REGULATION 665/98 HUNTING”:

Perhaps you hunt on 7a... but I kind of doubt it:

If anyone knows of any other rules or regulations that feed that note in the summary, I’d be pleased to know. But it looks to me like it’s just another poorly crafted “summary”.

Southern ontario has 1 or 2 or 3 controlled hunts per year depending what area youre in. During those controlled hunts my centerfire rifles arent legal to use for coyote which is small game because theyre over 400ftlbs.
Same as when i travel north im usually in possession of bear and deer licenses but often travel with others who arent. I prefer a 17mach2 for rabbit and grouse but the option of more rimfire power is a plus.
The 17 wsm had alot issues out of the gate and crappy rifle selections.
If savage used the 93 action and cz chambered it i think the 5mm would have a chance if ammo was always available

As near as I can tell, the 400 foot-pound stipulation was removed in the 544/17 amendment to section 77 of the Ontario hunting regulations, and just replaced with “center fire rifle”

I have an old one, part of my "mm" Rem collection. It's cool and fun to shoot and I like different stuff. Old green box does bout 1.5" or bit more @ 100yds but the Aqulia load got 3/4". More ammo would be nice! I'd try a newer one depending on manufacturer (CZ ?!?! )

More ammo is on the way and Canada Ammo should have some in the spring. I have a Model 591 and 592 that were bought by my dad in the early 70's. It is a great round and we took many Yotes with them back in the 70's. Thousands of Gophers lost their lives with the 5mm as well. I still have about 700 rounds left and will be buying more when it's available. I bought the last brick Can Am had a few years back, but it was pricey at 300 bucks per brick.

Aguila is doing a run of 5mm ammo right now and will be available soon. The Savage rumor of making a 5mm Mag was around a few years back but I haven't heard anything about it happening lately.

Yeah, agree wholeheartedly there.

Having to choose between a Savage that had a distinct look to it or a Winchester Low wall that cost a lot, wasn't really a great marketing move.

As far asthat 400 ft/lbs issue goes, I can reload my ammo down to sub-rimfire energies, or too a lot higher than that. Now, being out in the edge of the parts of the country where they will happily treat you as if you are a poacher by default, aka: parts East, I can see why you wouldn't wish to push your luck, but me, I'm pretty happy to live where they don't write me a speeding ticket based on the top advertised speed of my car, if you know what I mean.

Well that would be the way to go... ask the CO if he brought a beam scale and chronograph with him to prove you’re over 400ftlbs. But it looks like a moot point now, and that it’s just all centerfires that are affected.

I was given a hard time and asked to prove my 22mag was under 400ftlbs. I had to google wiki about the speeds and even energy formula to calculate based on the speed on the box. Its a dumb law and i think most COs would be good enough to deal with but theres always that one

I agree downloading a centerfire is a better route than a rimfire bout because our stupid laws it narrows what we can use
The 275 rule is even dumber. A 275 rigby stamped rifle is legal but a 7x57 isnt. I can use a 270wby but not a 9x19 pistol carbine.

I think the 5mm is a neat round and it shouldnt be to hard to convert a 17hmr or 22mag i would imagine. If current magnum rimsfires offered a choice in 5mm id happily add one.
Good to hear the ammo is coming. Savage had said if the ammo source were stabile theyd build the rifle. Maybe they will. Hopefully.
Ive never used a 5mm but always had thw curiousity.
