223 & 224 whats up?

Hey all I need some help understanding this. I will be reloading some 223 cases for my Tikka 223 Varmint (24 inch barrel).
The bullets I like are the Lapua Scenar L I notice that their description reads 224 . Do these work for 223? I am not understanding the difference or use.
All thoughts are welcome I really appreciate it

Most '22" caliber centerfire bullets are .224 inches in diameter

So yes, they are the correct bullets for your .223 rifle

Welcome to the world of reloading. 0.224 is correct. Many bullet diameters are different than their cartridge names.

Try buying .270" bullets for your 270 winchester, or .300" bullets for a 300 win mag. Or .303" bullets for a 303 British.

223 Remington is the cartridge name. The caliber is .224 inches.

303 British is the cartridge name. The caliber is .312 inches.

Etc.

The .220 Swift, .221 Fireball, .222 Remington, .223 Remington, and .224 Valkyrie, and others all use .224" bullets. The number is often just used to differentiate the rounds from each other for marketing purposes.
Kind of like how the .44 magnum is really a .42 caliber and shoots a .429" bullet. Marketing.

7.82 Warbird, 30-06, 308 winchester, 7.62 NATO, and 300 Winchester are all 30 caliber cartridges using .308" bullets.

...and conversely the 7.62x54R Russian uses a different diameter bullet than the 7.62x51, despite both being called "7.62 mm".

I strongly agree with FoxAlpfa and billdick get some manuals and read them, especially the front part on how to reload.

And each page for reloading a specific caliber will list the case and bullet dimensions.

I have been reloading for over 47 years and every year I pickup on of my many manuals and reread them. This replaces any information that may have leaked out of my ears.

So.. a bit of an aside... but where DID they come up with the off-numbers? Where did the 303 in 303 British come from? Why 223rem and not 224?
