577-450 with smokeless

Hey woodchopper, I know this is an older thread, but how did you make out with the IMR 4227? get any good results? also has anyone had any good results with a .458 bullet? My Martini is a MkI and I've heard that the MkIs had the smallest bores on the spectrum?

I can report that he is still around so clearly his reloading has been done safely!

yepers still here, still have 2 eyes and all my fingers :D

Rifle is a MK IV 1887 dated. I think I slugged it at .461"

I fired these loads for the CHAS pre '55 milsurp shoot, and held 1st place for the first 3 relays.

I went as high as 43grains of IMR 4227 but that was getting a little too close to my max pucker factor

backed it off to 38grains and I'm getting 1560-1570FPS and fairly good accuracy, good enough to hit a fig 11 target at 500m :D (well not every time)

but start with mild loads and work your way up.

so trolling old threads of mine :)

and happy to report that my little stash of 577-450 brass has continued to grow ever so slightly, I have about 70 pieces now.

I've also picked up a spare set of dies and have 3 shell holders, 480 Ruger dies do work for necksizing

I now have 5 Martinis in 577-450 and a Martini Cadet in 310 Cadet and a greener Mk III in 12/14 gauge. The Greener is the only one I have not been able to source shells for.

I have shot 4 of the 577-450s the last one is more of a parts gun, Its a mess of parts and looks like someone tried to fake a carbine, I also have a spare MkII martini receiver that will be made into something one day.

I've used up my original box of 500 rounds and have acquired more so I can say that 38grns of IMR4227, with a magnum rifle primer and t sheets of JW TP for wadding is working well.

I just recently learned about shooting smokeless powder out of black powder rifles. I am very excited to give this a try and this thread has been extremely useful. I do have one rather odd question and it’s about the toilet paper haha. How much should be used, and should it be packed into the bottom or just lightly stuffed in? Might seem like a dumb question but I’d like to avoid having an obituary that list my cause of death as “mis use of toilet paper”

Ed, the TP is just filler, keeping the powder up against the primer. You need a fairly fast rifle powder for large straight wall or big bottle necked cases but safe pressure loads only fill half the case. You dont want to have a primer 'flash over' the entire powder load, strange and bad things can happen.

I use 2 sheets in the 577-450 and its lightly packed. I have found tightly packed wads down range but mostly I get a confetti effect on firing.

Someone's bound to suggest stuffing a bit of Turdo over the toilet paper. Many feel he could use a trip downrange.

Thinking of using smokeless in place of traditional BP got me to wondering if Trail Boss might be a possibility? Lotsa volume, not too much pressure...
