First Precision Rifle Help

Look at a gen 1 Remington 5R milspec. You can pick one up in the EE for $1000 ish. They are sub .5 moa rifles out of the box. The only negatives are no box mag and the barrel isn’t threaded. The stock is good and is actually worth something if you did decide to change it up. There are also box mag conversions available.

A lot of the suggestions on here are essentially projects. I wouldn’t recommend that for a first precision rifle. You want s turn key solution that will provide excellent accuracy and feedback right out of the box. Get the new shooter hooked on the precision part first. Leave the upgrade and modding projects for later on. Ultimately the AR and 10/22 rule the modding protect guns. For a first precision rifle Out of the box accuracy and ease of achieving this should be the first priority along with a reasonable price tag .

thats what i had figured, gives me advantage for competion if i choose to do so in the future.

the serch continues, i had asked cabelas if they would possible honor last weeks deal on 10tr but no dice.

will keep searching.

I seem to recall reading somewhere that the sale on the 10T-SR was an inventory clear out sale. I was told I got the last one in the back at the YXX location - there was one still on the floor, but the stock was scuffed to hell from their metal sale rack...

Just a thought for your budget calculations. Also calculate how much you plan to shoot to actually be able to consistently shoot long distance, ie. how much training/ practice you guesstimate you need, and then how much the ammo or reloading components will cost to get there. Because without practice the Equiptment won't do it. You may be better served as others have mentioned by a build strategy that can be improved over 1-3 years to get what you need. Ammo, travel and practice time tend to be far more expensive then the original rig. Just my 2 cents

deffintly agree and plan on spending some time on range shooting, as practice makes perfect.

i am open to many options... not set in stone...

want something build able over 1-3 years as you mentioned.

There are some kits at cabelas and other retaiirs for $600-800 but dont think they will stand up to a rifle and scope purchase as well.

I could be complelty wrong and out to lunch.

I put together a Howa 1500 in a KRG Bravo for right around $1200. Super impressed with it. 1 piece bolt, integral recoil lug, tool less bolt take down, fluted barrel, M16 style extractor, 2 stage trigger that is very good (minus the over travel) and it shoots great. Also very impressed with the KRG Bravo. Super comfy and rigid. Lots of options for add-ons as well. I had a CTR which i really liked but wasn't super impressed with the stock and if you upgrade it turns into a $2000+ gun. I built this for a hunting rig. 308 20" barrel. Something to consider. Hope it helps!

Factory stock gen 1 Remington 5R milspec with 168 Federal Gold. First two groups I've ever shot in 308 at 100. Can't recall if it was yards or metres.

Plain jane, nothing fancy rifle. Yet it punches well above it's price point.

that's definitely a tight grouping coming out of that rifle.

I had to back step from my original plan.

ended up with savage 110 storm which is getting me shooting now rather than waiting longer. Plan on tossing it in upgrade chassis, and upgrading the scope ASAP.

stoked to be shooting and learning new things every day I go shooting.

Which barreled action did you use? That doesn't look like a stock Howa KRG

How about a ruger precision rifle in 6.5 creedmore. Look around on the EE and you can throw a bushnell fixed 10x scope on it for a couple hundred bucks. You can upgrade from there.

I see a new thread where a guy bought one from Bullseye London. I'm sure they are kicking around not that hard to find.
