Grand Power X-Calibur. The good the bad and the ugly??

So my LGS has a very very lightly used GP X-calibur out of a collection for pretty much half price of new. I held it and pointed it and I really like the way it feels. But I honestly know nothing about the brand or model. The huge safety levers would have to go and I don’t like the slide release being so far forward that I can not hit it with my strong hand thumb and it is very slick to the side of the pistol, but in a bit of research I found it has a full mag slide release when you insert a new full mag which I do like.

I am in the market for a new pistol and I want a longer sight radius model. I was almost dead set on a Glock G34 but the GP has over a 8” sight radius and a fiber optic sight from factory which is nice.

What is everyone’s opinion and experience with these pistols? Availability of parts and holsters? Let me know what you think and please make recommendations for similar set ups. Will be using pistol for IDPA and playing “tactical silly bugger” as we call it with my army buddies. Thanks!

Didn't have the X-Calibur but did own the K-100 and loved that gun. Very accurate. Very well made (machining was beautiful, no tool marks whatsoever ), and beautiful tennifer finish. Parts were readily available at my time of ownership. And it kills any glock in terms of trigger and shootability. My 2 cents.

How is a "tennifer finish" beautiful when you can't even see it?

I have owned the K100 mk 5 and k100 mk12, they were good shooters and build quality and very nice. The major downfall is the takedown and reassembly. I took them each apart at least 10 times and every single time it was a struggle to get them back together. At the price point the X-caliber is at, there are many other better options.

If I was buying it new I would never consider it but like I said this is out of a collection and has 1 or 2 boxes through it and is priced right around $600. I can’t even get a used G34 for that that has a few thousand through it.

Can you tell me why? Did you have a bad experience? Owned one and hated it? If so why?

I've owned both. I'll keep it simple. Parts availability, Glock. Holster availability, Glock. Accessories, Glock. Support, Glock.

If you're stuck on the GP have at 'er.

Heres my 2 cents......I shoot the x-trim now and for the past few years.Like it so much that I bought a second one as a backup in case of a malfunction during competition and am in the process of buying a K22 for speed steel. The only reason I didnt buy the Excalibur is that it is not IDPA legal (too heavy) but you can use it for IPSC.
For that price that is being offered to you ....buy it...Then either shoot it and enjoy or sell it to me and make a few bucks.
The guns themselves are smooth functioning ,excellent trigger pull and reset ....yes...a pain in the ass to disassemble at first but once you get over the learning curve its fine.Only issue I have ever had was my "torture test".......I dont clean the weapon until I find the point where it starts to fail....GP is about 1000 rounds when stove piping occurs....My MP9mm was 7000 rounds and still going.
Hope this helps you out.....really hope it helps you make a couple bucks ....LOL

Cheers,

Bruce

It is not legal for IDPA due to the fluted barrel. Should you buy it? It depends. I would buy it at $600 if I were you, if I was just using it as a nice range pistol. It is definitely worth $600. It’s not worth MSRP IMO. I would not trust it in competition.

I bought one last year for IPSC and used it all year. Put over 5000 rounds through it. It was having constant failure to feed issues with 147 grain bullets, and if it got too dirty especially on the barrel the slide would entirely lock up and you’d have to push it against a table to get it open. It sh*t the bed hard at the Minnesota USPSA Section Championship. I contacted Grand Power Canada and they basically blamed me for not cleaning it well enough (others have had similar poor customer service from GPC). I like the gun enough to keep it and I can shoot it fast and accurately, but it’s nowhere near reliable enough to be used in competition.

I have an X-Trim that occasionally sees IDPA use. (The X-Calibur is not IDPA legal, as others have mentioned.) It is broadly similar.

I only have three complaints with the gun: (1) dis/reassembly is a bit of a nuisance as compared to other makes; (2) it does not like being dirty; (3) finding a suitable holster can be challenging. I will say it has been very accurate.

Like my x-calibur but I only shoot it for bullseye. Once you take it apart a few times, it isn't a problem. I usually clean it after about every 100 shots, haven't have problems with stoppages.

Drop in to DVC. We have 3 of them on line for our customers to use. They do like being kept clean compared to some of the other guns (ie cleaned after ~1000 rounds), but the rotating barrel really helps with recoil and it's a very accurate gun. I can show you how to take off and put the slide back on. Once you know how, it's really simple.

I bought an used X-calibur package from EE (a new one was a bit too expensive to me) and I absolutely love it.
If I'd found one for $600 I'd probably be like "shut up and take my money". I've shot quite many handguns and I can tell for sure that this one has a very very nice trigger and excellent variety of backstraps so you can make it fit your hand really well (probably better than pretty much any other pistol).
After X-calibur I've decided I should give a try to K22S for cheaper practice (shot it the first time today) and now I'm pretty much a GP fanboy. In my opinion their guns are highly underrated.
