I've gotten into PPC lately and I want to start competing, but the holster I have currently has no retention features and hence it doesn't qualify for duty pistol. I want to invest in a quality level II retention holster that can serve me well in competition. I have no idea what features or brands are desirable. If anyone could give me advice on what to look for or specific models, it'd be much appreciated. :)

EDIT: I'm shooting a full-size USP .40.

Grab yourself a Blackhawk cQc Serpa Holster ... if it's legal for PPC

A great holster, I've got 'em for my Kimber and my 226. Unfortunately it's considered a level 1 retention due to just having the trigger catch. My understanding is the friction adjustable screw isn't considered a retention level because you could still pull the gun from the holster with thumb and forefinger if the trigger catch was defeated. I asked this question recently when I took a holster qualification course at POCO. Doug Kress was the instructer and a recognised PPC expert.

That's a bit of a shame., so does that mean that the Serpa is not PPC legal?

No, I'm just saying it's not a level II which Azz says is a requirement for "Duty Pistol" Division which means you must use a holster similar to one used by police etc. They use a level II or III as standard department policy so it's less likely a bad guy can take your duty pistol from you. There are various levels of competition in PCC and a level I might be ok for others.

After reading the rule book it looks like only the Duty category of competition requires a level II or higher holster. The 67 page booklet is available free on the CPCA website. Any actual PPC'ers can jump in and correct me if I'm wrong.

Yep, I did check out the CQC Serpa and it did look pretty sweet, but unfortunately it would appear Mike is correct - Level I retention. The rules are as follows:

Holsters must be a minimum Level II Retention type as used by a Canadian Police agency for uniform duty use. Magazine carriers must be snap or Velcro fastened and a maximum of two carriers can be on the belt.

As far as I know, only duty pistol requires level II. I want to use one holster for all the courses of fire though, so level II it is. I think I'd be on a more level playing field in duty pistol as well, since I haven't made any pimped out modifications to my pistol and in the open course of fire the revolvers have the advantage.

Mike, I shoot up at PoCo as well - do you ever come up for the PPC practices?
