Hello friends,

I took the grips off of my SP101 Match Champion and a flat metal shim fell out from inside. I do not know what it is, and it isn't listed in the parts nomenclature in the manual.

Anyone able to tell me what it is? and where it goes back in to the gun or grips when I put them back on? I also can't seem to get the grips back on the gun with the same tightness as they came. There's a very slight wiggle.

Put the left grip - the one with the large locating pin, securely on the gun. Have a look at the front of the grip and the back - you should see a bit of a gap, between the grip and the frame, in either one of those spots. That is where the previous owner put the modified Starrett feeler gauge. You do the same and the play should be gone.

I would never expect to see something like that ever go IN a Ruger. Actually looks like a Starrett thickness/feeler gauge that was bent/broken to length and slipped in. I think I would be calling Ruger CS to see if they actually do this with their own guns or if those were not original grips..
Not a big deal if you are happy with it but is is a bit suspect..

I would think that if it was a new gun , the store may have done this to tighten up a lose grip, maybe?
I can't see ruger doing that, they would find a set of grips that work.
This is not a Ruger part, just a piece for a shim, beer can, or card stock is easier to work with

it was a brand new gun. i guess ruger is fitting the grips with these shims.

anyways, thanks man. your tip worked great.

That is not a new gun... either there was a previous owner (store return item), or the store that you purchased from modified it with a piece of feeler gauge to tighten the grip... not a reputable thing to do... I would bring it back to the seller and have them fix it.

I think you've nailed it probably just a broken feeler gauge dropped in during manufacture.

It is not feeler gauge dropped in during manufacture... it was placed there post manufacture, probably to tighten the grip by a previous unknown owner or by the retailer, who did not want to deal with a customer irate at another hold up in receiving his revolver.

All I know is I wouldnt be wrecking an expensive set of feeler guages to shim a gap like that unless it was a piece of scrap. Lots of other methods, most of which are less obvious. We would need to see the presentation side of the grips to determine if original or not but I can assure you that Ruger would never 'shim' a set of grips.

Sorry glossed over OP's reply about it being a new gun and the shim resolving the wiggle. Agreed it was intentionally placed.

How or when the shim got there is anybody's guess. Consider for a moment that the GP 100 and SP 101 grip frames were originally designed with a one piece rubber slip on grip with wood side panel inserts. Adapting 2 piece hardwood grips leaves room for looseness unless the manufacturing tolerances of the grips is perfect.
I would be curious if the GP 100 match champions suffer from the same looseness
Perhaps a dab of hot glue or some chewing gum to take up any slack instead of the shim?

Mystery solved.. I am just as surprised as everybody else. I would never expect Ruger to stoop to resorting to that method, but clearly I was wrong...again.
