I find the positioning of the safety on the frame makes it dig in to my thumb and I have to arch my thumb over it to get on top of it. The fact that most manufacturers make oversized safeties makes it worse. On my CZ Shadows I like a flat safety, there but barely noticeable.

You can “ melt” the edges off so they don’t dig. Funny you mention the safety. It’s the one thing I like in 1911s as it gives my thumb a positive rest. Unfortunately my habits from shooting them from years ago have transferred to my polymer guns now and I constantly ride the slide release and never get slide lock on empty costing me seconds. Talk about training scars!

The 1911 is an iconic pistol historically and just a really neat platform to have. I have a Rem a Ruger and working toward the Springfield. Everyone should have at least one 1911 in 45 ACP.

It's not the edges, it's basically the entire thing.

For me most guns are fine and lock back properly but the SIG P226 never does because the slide stop is so far back.

Agreed on the 226!

I think I know what you mean about the 1911 safety, I have the same problem with the BHP one. I think it's the safety/backstrap interface that rubs.
 
I owned a CZ97 a couple of years ago. I liked it a lot although the trigger reach in DA mode is very long. I posted a write up about it in this thread here. As for 1911s I've had good luck with SIGs for a $1200-ish price point, and my current 1911, a Dan Wesson Heritage was picked up off the EE for around that price.

1911s were my dream gun from when I was a kid. I could mentally strip one with my eyes closed even before I ever saw one in real life. I have shot Norincos, LBs to $5000 Wilson and Behlert custom comp guns. Then I bought one.....and another...and my bubble burst.

You think it was just your own bad luck and compared to your experience with more reliable and easier to maintain platforms, or have you also seen a disproportionate number or problems by others at the range? I have to admit, I shoot my p226, p220 and USP more because they are easier to strip and maintain. My 1911/2011's are fairly tight and a pita to strip so sometimes fall victim to my laziness.

Both my SIG and S&W had FTFs and also this annoying thing about not going into battery after about 50 rounds ( yup! 50 rounds!) I always clean my guns after each range session ( ask those who know my OCDness!) so the guns start spotless. Maybe the chambers are just too tight or my ammo too dirty.

But I've also seen more 1911s crap out during competition than any other gun. If there's a 1911 in our group, I guarantee a malfunction during the day at some stage. To be fair, it's mostly seen with reloaded ammo. The learning curve is even worse for shooters new to 1911s but that's mostly a training issue.

And you are right about the PITA in stripping and re-assembling the 1911. I've heard many say that it's no big deal but I must have clutzy hands!
 
SIG P220 and 1911 are both glorious and addictive. They are different beasts. The SIG with the DA/SA action, decocker, middle ground trigger and simplest disassembly is more suitable as a duty gun. Shoots great. Love it. Zero issues.

The 1911 is more of a sporting gun. Way better trigger on most of them. But fieldstrip is mildly annoying, the single action, and the carry cocked and locked make it better suited for combat and competition.

Love them both...and 45 rules!
 
Will never part with my Sti 1911 .45...such a sweet shooter...had a cz97b ..another great..albeit..large handgun..still have sellers remorse on that one...and 5he Hk45 was a super sweet pistol..shot well but left me a little meh...can’t critisize its form or function though...again with the Sig 220..big super sweet pistol..but didn’t make me want to keep it..guess it’s just a feel thing..the 1911 and Cz just fit the hands so perfectly..imho
 
I love the 45 too.

My biggest gripe with the 1911 has always been the stock slide release. I think JMB (god rest his soul) had 5 inch long thumbs. The RIGHT slide release makes the gun much more enjoyable to run for me. Same with the safety. I think my favourite is the SIG TACOPS 1911. Feels great in the hand.

That said, i'd take a Sig 220 Legion SAO every day and 2 on the Astral Conflux over any 1911 i've handled to date.
 
Get a quality 1911, a S&W 625/25, a Sig P220, and a HK USP series. And if you’re really hard up a Glock 21, but only after you get first four mentioned. Good luck and post pics of your picks.
 
My go to 45 ACP would be the P227R, 10 rounds, compact and the best night sights ever, they are like little light bulb.

I'm inching towards the P220 for its smaller grip size, and I'll start hunting the EE section for a good deal, should a used one come up.

Worst that can happen is that I don't like it and sell it for the same price I paid.
 
You asked about the C 97. I bought mine several years ago. The grip requires a large hand for certain due in part to the DA trigger arrangement. I use a Medium large golf glove to give you an idea of my hand size. I don't struggle with the trigger when I shoot it but I would not enjoy the gun if my hands were any smaller. The guns are extremely reliable and the accuracy I found was on par with any production gun I have shot. I have never bothered to change the sights which to be honest, are not as good as they might be for action shooting.

The gun is worth looking at for certain. I must be honest though mine has sat in my safe for the last few years and I should really send it down the road but the gun does have a certain attraction and as I said worth considering if you are looking for a DA/SA .45acp
