Hello All,

I just moved to Winnipeg from Alberta and am looking forward to doing some hunting here this fall. I'd like to stay relatively close to Winnipeg - within 2 hours - if at all possible. The problem is, I have NO IDEA where to begin with respect to knowing where to go to hunt...

a) Moose
b) Deer
c) Turkey
d) Ducks and/or Geese
e) Grouse

...any suggestions, hints, or information to help get me pointed in the right direction would be appreciated.
 
Well, within 2 hours you got everything, but moose you may have to go farther. And you can add Elk to the list as well. Lots of great hunting spots within 90 minutes or less. And you won't need a 4x4 or atv, but handi in the big snows. There is tons of crown land that have it all except turkey, they are so smart I think the buggers can read the no hunting signs.
Let us know what kind of hunting, bow,black powder, rifle??.

CBW i have to agree with the turkeys being smart bit, that depends on where you go. i hunt family land an hour west of the city on hwy 2, and there is an abundance of deer and turkeys. the turkeys are incredibly stupid, but there is no hunting pressure in that area, that is the big factor. further south around la riviere i hear they are a bit harder to find.

as for grouse drive east on the transcanada till you hit the sandilands forest, then start walking the forestry roads.

Plenty of deer within 2 hrs of the city. Pick an area you'd like to hunt and post it here. A few gunnuts may be able to help you zero in on a good area.

For moose you can drive to Riding Mtn area, or head up 304 into GHA 26 for late season. Or continue on 304 to Bisset if you want to try moose in early season. Just make sure get across the Wanipigow river into GHA 17.

Ducks and geese can be had in many areas within 2 hrs of the city. Again pick a GHA and ask fellow cgn'rs what would be a good choice.

No turkey up this way, try west or south east of the city.

Grouse numbers are down in this area. I haven't seen too many this year.
 
I almost got run over by elk in Spruce while bow hunting, ground shaking, and things making wind running on either side of me,lol. I still don't know how I didn't get flattened but good. I was crossing a clearing in the dark, man that was different.
 
Try checking out some of the local rural municipal website within the distance you want to hunt.Some do show ownership maps from there you could find a chunk of crown land to hunt.
Deer and grouse I would go either around the Inwood area or Ritcherand east or southeast.
Moose my dad use to hunt the general season in the begining of Dec. up around Bird lake follow the logging trails.I think it might be bulls only.
Turkey head off around Lariviere.
duck and geese pretty much anywhere I would try up around Libau around devils creek.
Elk Riding Mountain,spruce woods as well as the Interlake.

Hey, I was bowhunting the Spruce Woods area for the first time last year (whitetails). I saw a few deer, but only 1 day did I have deer come by the stand.

Which part of the park were you hunting in? Were you out for deer or elk? I know there are elk around, but I've never seen them or even any tracks. Do they tend to stick to the Shiloh area more?

I was close to Shewfelts Lake in early October, and on Thanksgiving weekend I was hunting a different stand close to the #5 Highway, about 1/2way between Glenboro and the #1 Highway.

I don't know the area very well, so I was on the ground much of the time, scouting while I was hunting. I'm going to try and get out again this fall. It's beautiful terrain out there! Sure changes quickly as you hike around, though!

There sure are a lot of coyotes, too. I was up in my stand at Shewfelts and I could hear the different packs howling all around me. It sure was memorable!
