Anybody try 300gr. JHP's in thier 458's?

I'm finding the factory 510gr'ers to be over penetrating on bunny's:)

Haven't, yet. I assume that is a Sierra bullet? If so, I'd be interested in hearing how they work out. What do you plan to use that load on? I haven't had my .458's very long so I'm just getting to trying out some loads for them. Played with a few cast bullet loads but I think I'll leave the cast 'stuff' for my .45-70. I have some 350gr Speer Flat-SP, 400gr Speer Flat-SP, 350gr Hornady FP, 500gr Hornady RN & FMJ-RN. So far, just 'shaking out' ;) the cobwebs for the most part. What .458wm do you have?

For cast loads in 458 try some loads for 45-90, about the same case capacity, much easier on your shoulder.

Never really noticed how close the case capacity of the .45-90 is to the .458wm. Sounds like a reasonable plan.:) Just noticed something else, the Lyman #48 manual has 45-90 info but the Third Edition Cast Bullet book doesn't. Strange? I would've thought it might be the other way around if anything. Thanks again for the suggestion OPC X6.

Well....Was out messing with my Brno 602 again.....I remember why I put it in the back of the safe last time now. Those 500 grainer's have a wallop...

Has anybody tried the 300gr Nosler partitions in thier 458?

Was looking for a moose load.

300gr R-P
H4198 63grs
Fed 215
W-W case
2.950" OAL
2247fps

I used to have a Ruger #1 and shot the above load. Good for some plinking :p

I shoot the Hornady 300gr and 350gr out my 458 win. The 350 shoot better then the 300's I use a medium charge of IMR 3031. It's my eye looker deer load with buddies at work. Still tring to get some of them to shoot it with the Hornady 500's.

Bob Mitchell of Mitchell ballistics has been testing are 475gr. cast gc.(hard cast) in the CZ .458, accuracy falls off above 2000fps, next up is the same bullet cast from Linotype with BHN of 24(or so they say), MT Chambers to supply bullets.....It appears that the twist may be a little quick as the bullets shot real well for me, at high speeds with my 1-18" twist. Cast bullets would be the best way to cut down on the recoil and save some cash, you might want to try the Gould Hollow point at 340grs. on bunnies and gophers.

the 300gr Remington JHP's are downright explosive at 2300ish fps out of my 45-70. Great little varmint round, but I wouldn't recommend it at those speeds at anyhting bigger than 'yote-sized

Are you for real:confused: .458/510gr'ers on bunnies:confused: Me thinks you should stop playing with your WILLIE and get a .22. Monster meat eating bunnies:D:evil:

More load developing:runaway::D

300grJHP....70grsIMR4198 = 2650fps

This load seems very accurate....about an inch at 100yards....I have to do more shooting to see if it will do this all the time or if it was just a freak of nature.

My goal is 2750fps with a 300gr nosler partition...I'm using 300gr. JHP's to get me in the ball park as the partitions are $71/50:eek:

I've run into a bit of a problem....case is full with IMR4198
No pressure signs....So...I need a little faster powder...
I see H4198 is a little faster on some burn rate charts....some show it slower:confused:

Any powder suggestions?

I just know that extra 100fps is going to make a world of difference on those harder to kill bunnies:)

Russ...

4198 is the powder of choice, but if case volume is starting to be a problem, you might try Win 748. A good starting point with a 300 gr bullet might be around 76 gr. Personally I doubt if 2700 fps is a realistic expectation, unless you have a Lott chamber.

Found some load data.....Hodgdon

300 GR. BAR XFB 300
H4198 / .458" / 3.275"

72.0 2669fps 46,000 CUP

77.0C 2784fps 50,700 CUP

Maybe I can cram a little more powder in after all...With
H4198.

Those waskly wabbit's are in for it now:)

458 win mag.

I had the same trouble a few years back with a bunny. I ploude down one at 30 yards with my thompson sub machine gun (semi auto of course)in 45 acp. Sent him into the bush with a serious problem. Never did find him.So this fall I was hunting with my sauer m90 in, ya you guessed it 458 win.mag.Cant wait to get one in my iron sights and then see what happens. I know trees are not safe.

Dug the 458 out today and tried my new load....Made last fall:redface:

300gr. Nosler partition COL 2.915
74.2grs H4198
2812fps 10ft. from muzzle 1 3/4" @ 100yards 3 shot group
Very consistant speed....This load rocks in my 602.

2.4" high at 100 2353fps 3689fpe
2.1" high at 150 2145fps 3064fpe
0.0" high at 200 1949fps 2531fpe
-4.4" low at 250 1767fps 2079fpe
-11.7" low at 300 1600fps 1705fpe

Now to find out if Nosler's bullet will stand up to the speed.:sniper:
