Stag 10 - Barrel Faxon Pencil (or Big gunner) BSF CF wrapped

Hey All

Bought the 6.5 factory built stag before Christmas and I am loving it. So I have decided trying my luck at building my own. I have always been fascinated by the AR platform but never bought one ever with my RPAL. But with this things have changed. I did a search and couldn't see if this was asked. So here it is.

I am building a light weight upper for hunting purposes. I have narrowed it down a few options on barrels.

Faxon - Pencil Barrel - 20" - 2.07lbs
Faxon - Big Genner - 20" - 2.24lbs
BSF - CF Wrapped - 18.6" - 2.08lbs

Now the questions:

Which one you like? Is the money worth going to the CF wrapped? Any one use Faxon Pencil barrel, Opinions?

Just give me the run down and thoughts. Opinion are welcome

I think the Faxon Gunner profile is not worth the weight savings over heat disapation of the Match Fluted HB. The CFW barrel models are light and disapate heat well which the pencil barrels do not. CFW barrels are expensive compared to the pencil barrel options. So comes down to budget and amount of rounds you like to shoot at a time.

I have a Faxon Pencil Barrel on my Stag 10. The weight / balance is great for off hand shooting. Accuracy using Hirtenberg is typically 2 to 3" off a bi-pod with no rear support. Honestly though I'm a poor marksman.

Where can I get a match fluted HB? Considering they are very similar in weight with the gunner. Any other thoughts?

What do you think of the pencil? It will primarily be for hunting so not too many rounds at any given time. But it would be nice to shoot a mag or 2 at the range.

BSF the best option for best of both?

Alberta Tactical Rifle is where I buy Faxon barrels due to there sometimes brutally honest advice, excellent customer service and extensive knowledge on building ARish type rifles. Jerry Teo of Mystic Precision is also very, very good person to do business...same level as ATR and he sells a McGowan barrels and i think some other high end U.S. barrel manufacturer but i cannot remember who. Really good experiences with both.

Pencil barrel is great for hunting due to the light weight and you generally fire 1 maybe two shots so the heat issue is not a worry. My cold bore point of impact on my pencil barrel is only a slight shift i.e less then a inch from a warm / hot barrel, surplus ammo and bi-pod shooting only with no rear support...i.e. the rifle I'm sure can shoot much better. The pencil barrel can handle a full pistol mag i.e 10 rounds before it heats up a whole lot and you start to see stringing / point of impact change....or maybe its just my poor shooting lol. If target shooting i would recommend a heavier profile barrel....lots of options out there....International Barrels and Maple Ridge Armoury are Canadian.

same here, I asked the weight of the 16" AR barrel as its not on their site. been over a week and not heard back. if I cannot get a simple answer to a simple question, I don't care how good their barrels are if customer support is ####. I will spend my money else where.

Ya, I’m looking at JP barrel and bolt , out the US.
It looks very promising:)
 
It all depends on what your after, the big gunner is a larger diameter I believe, bigger diameter means more shots but it heats it will retain more heat

I had a Faxon 20” .308 pencil barrel on my stag 10. The weight you have listed for it is correct, Faxon always has the correct weight listed on their website from my experience. With me shooting factory loads it was about a 1.5moa barrel. I’d rate my skill as average as a LD shooter.

This weekend I’m going to install a MRA 18.6” pencil barrel. It’s a bit lighter (don’t have numbers in front of me atm). But I recall it being about 1oz lighter. I was more concerned with shortening the rifle up and having it balance a bit better. I’ll pry get it to the outdoor range on Monday.

I’d also prefer shorter as well. Where did you get MRA from?

Mileageman, can you please report back your findings of the new shorter barrel?
Mine is all stock, and balance is lacking for off shoulder shooting. (Hunting purposes)
My original thought was fluted barrel, possibly maple ridge.
I was afraid of going pencil, as my savage 110 sporter barrel starts opening up after 3 shots, and after 6 shots it went from MOA to 5 moa. (2.5" in random directions)
If your new shorter pencil profile can get 3-4 moa on the 10th round, I would gladly go pencil profile.
Can you share the cost of your barrel as well? And let us know what you used to test out the new barrel? I use Hirt for practice, and 168 TTSX for hunting.
