Help me pick a first Handgun - Girsan Regard Railed or CZ 75 SP-01 Phantom

You’ve mentioned budget a few times now. Consider two things:

- it’s easier to learn on a .22
- .22 ammo is a lot cheaper than 9mm

Browning Buckmark and the Ruger Mark (whatever) are reliable staples in the .22 pistol arena.

That's like trying to pick between a Rolls Royce and a Chevy Volt.

Two entirely different classes of guns altogether.

It would all depend on what you want to pay, what your planning on using the gun for, and if your going to want to keep it.

I would go for the CZ; I prefer the quality over the price.

If price is your deciding factor, go for the Girsan.

From what I've seen, the Girsan is a good gun; but it's not on the same level as the CZ.

The Phantom is a nice gun but comes with a less than stellar trigger and is not in the current CZ catalog ie it is out of production.

If this is your first handgun I would strongly recommend the 92 FS series. The gun is accurate, dead nuts reliable with a long history. If you have small hands though the gun is not for you, nor is the Girsan. I have seen the 92FS on the EE for as low as $650 used but described as like new. I have bought most of my guns off the EE and never had a problem. You cannot go wrong with the 92FS.

The Girsan is a copy of the 92F and has a smaller hammer pin. I have read where there were problems with the design during the US Military trials and Beretta changed the diameter of the pin to ensure the slides would stay in place. Don't take that all to the bank as it has been sometime since I read the article. I have a Girsan Compact and enjoy the gun. The sights are really for younger eyes bit it is really a solid pistol. It is as accurate as any of my guns or put another way more accurate than I can shoot freestyle. Most guns made today are more accurate than the shooters holding them. There are exceptions to the shooters but not many from what I have seen.

My first probationary shoot was a 92FS and I really enjoyed it. Felt good in the hands so far, but I haven't held anything "smaller" or whatever. I'm hoping to get to the range after work early this week for probationary shoot 2 and try something else just to see if full size is the way to go for me. I really like the 92FS so far, but also waiting for access to the EE, so I can't see any of that good stuff yet.

Girsan MC28 is one of the few pistols I have sold. Terrible trigger.

The Canik looks similar and is much, much better. One on EE for $460.

Buy the CZ.

A friend of mine picked up a MC28 TX from Tenda, once I'm through probationary shoot, or if I can get a chance to go with him, I feel like I'll get a chance to give that a whirl. I'm still too new to realize the difference between a good and bad trigger yet. :)

THanks everyone for all the replies! THere's a lot of good info here. Feel like I found the right place to bounce opinions off people. Hoping to get to the range tomorrow and get some more time in to help w the decision :)
Those who've shot the 92FS, where does it lie on the felt recoil scale? 9mm with that full size gun was nowhere near as bad I thought it was

92's are a slower recoiling pistol, only has a 13lb recoil spring, I find them nice shooters, easy to shoot well and stay on target.

if you're going to buy a CZ don't get the Phantom, get a Shadow, or a Shadow 2. Yes more money, although you can find Shadows for sale cheap these days, used one that is, but unless it's one of my match guns I doubt it has enough wear and tear on it to be a worry.

If it's possible try them both out first.

Some of the guys at your local range might let you try theirs.

Held a CZ75, a Shadow 1, and Shadow 2 today. Felt the difference, and once I saw the fibre optic sights on the shadow 1 Canadian edition and Shadow 2 I immediately dropped the idea of the Phantom for 1st gun. The Canadian Edition Shadow and Shadow 2 felt amazing. Sadly the Shadow 2 was the urban grey, and if I was springing that kinda dough, it would have to be black w/ the blue grips. SO nice.

I wanted some more trigger time before posting. Have you considered an IWI Jericho (all steel)? While a great looking gun, it is how it handles and shoots that matters most to me. Trigger-wise, it is about as good as it gets; as good as or better than a CZ; Grip is similar or identical to the CZ; CZ mags work in it; it's mags work in the CZ. For me accuracy is above par.

+1 on CZ. I wanted a polymer so I got a P-09 (used from EE). I quickly got rid of my Glock after. I use it for target and CQB shoots, it is my favorite now.

I have shot both 92FS and CZ 75, good on both. Beretta was shooting way to low for me, and being the standard model, I could not adjust the sights. And the grip is quite larger. Only thing it had was the "every film made in the 90's" look :)

As your first, I would say get used one and spend more on ammo. Shoot it like crazy, get your basics in before choosing. I sold 2 pistols I thought I could not hit a barn with when I started and how I regret selling them. It was a lack of proper handling, not the pistols. I also learned that, with my small hands, single stacks are better for me. But with proper technique I can handle the bigger ones (I have a FNX45, very large grip and I do fine. Now).
