As of March 11, 2019 Westjet now charges $50 to fly with Firearms.

There is no grandfathering of tickets already purchased.

Is that including check baggage fee or is that separate?

If included not a biggie, as you need a checked bag anyhow

I'm not sure if you're asking about the Westjet fee or the Mastercard World coverage. Assuming you mean Wesjet, this is on top of the baggage fee. Therefore assuming a round trip to US your fees are:
flying south: Cdn$30 (1st bag) plus Cdn$50 (firearm)
flying north: US$30 (1st bag) plus US$50 (firearm)
converting at 1.35 means the total cost is Cdn$188

Get a mastercard world, it refund those extra fees at the airport.

I just looked this up. It's "World Elite" not "World" (these are 2 different cards), and the maximum baggage fee is $100/year. Whether they consider a Firearm fee as a baggage fee would require further discussion with the bank... and I know how they love to give us the benefit of the doubt on these sorts of things.

That sucks, but Air Canada had these fees for a long time, and they charge for each flight segment IIRC.

The fees are now the same on WJ as AC, with the exception that AC will waive the fee if your frequent flyer status is high enough or if you purchase a Business Class ticket. WJ does not offer that.

Therefore WJ now offers service WORSE than AC.

… I've been a long time supporter of Westjet, but this may be the straw...

Air Canada also, they make it a pain in the ass too, I had my load all over all bags perfect, and I had to toss ALOT of my equipment because I couldn't put it into the double sides hard case, and they wouldn't get me back my other bags they sent thru first.... And I agree we should get priority or have the fire arms in the captions closet haha

I have the card and claimed in 2017 so yeah, it works. Try to put your gun case inside your check-in luggage or else you'll be charged for an extra luggage + a gun. Keep your bill, you have 60 days to claim a refund.

I just looked at the restrictions on the WestJet site and under ammunition it said ‘Ammunition can’t be altered’. What does that even mean?????

A little push back may change their minds if it comes from one or several of the gun associations

Didn't realize we had so many jet setters flying all over the globe with their guns...
They've charged for other gear like skis and such so... Why not guns?
Gotta make money somehow... I mean how are they supposed to cover the cost of my TWO free mini packets of pretzels every time I take a trip?

$50 to slap a sticker on your bag and make it a target...

Wonder if those of us with CAF ID will get by without the ding. I have had nice counter people in the past waive all the fees in the past.
