Westjet now has Firearms fee

handloads are not banned on international travel.
this new fee from WJ is bs, there is no new fee that they have to pay to carry firearms on their planes.

They also charge for the rifle case being oversized, for 52 inch rifle case its $75 plus $150 for 3 guns in there,$225 plus $30 for second and third bag each.Ammunition can't be in the same locked container as the firearms.Add tax its about $300 return for 3 gun, and forget taking shotgun shells because then you are overweight and it goes from $30 to $75. Your cart has to fly cargo as well, it gets expensive fast.

Nope on several counts.
It's $50 for 3 guns in the case.
Ammo can be in same outer container as firearm (ie; ammo and locked gun box together in single suitcase/container)
The "overweight due to shotgun shells" is misleading. You are limited to 5kg of ammo (shotguns shells or rifle shells or pistol shells). "Yes" if this 5kg puts your suitcase over the 50 lb max, then you are correct. I simply want to point out the 5kg ammo limit that paying extra will not allow you to take extra ammo. This is not a Westjet rule, this is an International rule.

I just scratch my head at airfare in general..

'Just finished purchasing some tickets... Hamilton to Vancouver with a one hour stop over in Calgary... $348.18

Vancouver to Toronto one week later nonstop... $194.38

$158.30 difference...

These are peasant class seats, but really..?

When I flew to Vegas in February even though I had a pistol and rifle in the same case I was charged an additional 2 checked bag fees as they explained each gun was subject to the baggage fee, regardless of sharing a case.

You got shafted. The agents thought this was the case but I made them call a supervisor and it's only 1 charge as long as they are in the same case.

No charge for Biz, handy for those Aeroplan redemption's.

No charge for Biz,
Actually, Scare Canada Business class gets charged; but often the check-in staff forget - they either assume it is included (It's business of course!) or forget to check since they aren't charging for luggage anyway. Get the wrong cranky ass#ole at the desk and they look it up and then charge you. Been there, seen it many times.

The only way out of the gun charge is with the loyalty programs (ie 25K Altltitude, 35K, 100K, etc...) where they waive sporting goods fees as one of the perks. They'll try - (you'd think a % of the fee goes in their personal pockets!!) but I carry the printed description of the perks with me to the desk.

I love the look of disappointment on their face when they figure out they can't charge me.

Figures. I'll find out tomorrow if they are paying attention. I'm only good at getting Aeroplan miles for everything but flying. No status....

What is going to be nice is getting Marriott Platinum status on reward points night redemptions later on this year.
