I need some advice as I am not an expert when it comes to Lugers. I have an opportunity to purchase a 1942 Luger Black Widow for $1200. Numbers matching but not the original magazine and no holster. Looks like it may need a lock back lever as the toggle wont lock back on last round. Not sure if its the mag or the lever but it looks like both are available out there. Overall looks to be in good condition with a decent bore, dark but good rifling.

What say you about this deal. Should I go for it? I've wanted a Luger for a long time and plan to shoot it, not let it sit in the safe.

prohib or restricted barrel? some pics would help... $1200 seems reasonable from what i've seen. Search the EE, there is one that just sold for 1950 with brand new restricted barrel, 2 mags (non match), and repro holster.

If its prohib 1200 is way high, although it depends on condition. Toggle stop is separate mechanism that needs to be present in the frame in order to work with mag follower button. If lower portion of the bolt is damaged as it has to have a lip for this toggle stop to catch on, then it may not work either.

Black Widow is a nickname given by a collector to enhance the price of Lugers with black grips.
Now, these grips are not plastic but bakelite.
Said Black Widow Lugers must answer to criterias of serial numbers and grips.
The best way to test your grips is to heat a thin piece of metal and apply it on the inside face of a grip panel.
If the surface melts, its plastic.
Original bakelite grips sell for a good price (+ or - US $ 250.00)

Georg Luger would cry at the re-barrelling of his creation.
It is only the stupid Liberal jackwagons (R.Lee Ermy) who imposed a two tiered unconstitutional classification system that created this "prohibited class" mess.

DWM, Kriegoff, Erfurt, Simson, & Mauser didn't make 4.5" barrels so any "restricted" length barrels erase any provenance that a Luger might offer. Poor provenance = reduced price.

Is a so-called re-barrelled Black Widow Luger worth C$1200.00? You be the judge......

Hmmmmmm, very interesting.....a new wrinkle: not enough info in your 1st post.

Hitler ordered the end of production of Lugers in late 1942, after one million + Lugers had been made.

The unconstitutional Liberal imposed "prohibited class" firearms didn't stop the Liberal Jackwagons from bringing in tens of thousands of prohibited firearms for themselves. Liberal Jackwagons broke their own law!

Okay, back to the question. C$1200.00? Is it a good price?

Maybe........Im thinking more along the lines of $800.00

$1200 is not unreasonable given the rarity and in original condition. Naturally, with this being Canada the prices do not command the levels that they do in the US however if it is in its original state, unaltered, and matching, it is not unusual to fetch that amount. Being a prohib does not devalue it. It merely restricts the market to which it can be sold. Rebarreling/reclassifying will indeed make it available to a greater market, but the collector market is gone. If you want to have a 'close to the original' versus an 'original' then so be it. If you want it, buy it. If you think it is too expensive, walk away. So long as you are happy with your decision is all that matters.

Provenance is irrelevant. A Restricted-Rebarrelled German (not Swiss or Navy/Artillery) Luger is worth $1200-$1500 in good condition. A prohibited one is worth less than $1000. You can't sell collectibility to someone who can't collect them.

Exactly (in my opinion).

From what I see , re-barreled, all-matching pistols run around + or - $1750.
Prohibs who were in that price range are down now around $800.00.
Collectability ? if you have only one ? any desirable characteristic ? do you think it will fetch high dollar ?
Mine is all matching except re-barreled, condition second to none and I shoot it with delight every time.

Bakelite IS thermosetting plastic. The first plastic invented.

You are right that bakelite plastic will not melt, but it is still used today in many products, for example handles on pots and pans, and electric wall receptacles and toggle switches.

I'm not certain of this, but I think there are some reproduction grip makers that use this material to make their replacement grips.

I have a numbers matching rebarrrelled absolute stunner P08 in perfect shape...1942.....it looks almost new.....plus period holster and 12 boxs of ammo up for grabs....you can call me 604 864 1505

I have been out of the lugers for a while, but keep my eyes open, I have not seen a vg. 4" listed at 500.oo , seem to be 800.oo and up.
