CASR article on Ranger Rifles:

Yes... let's equip all the Enfields with Ram-Line stocks.

I wonder if the person who wrote the article has spent any time either with the Rangers or up North. I've never heard a Ranger complain about the Enfieild, and weight definately isn't an issue. Alot of those guys spend their lives hunting out in the bush and tundra, and most probably shot heir first Elk with their parents before the writer was out of diapers. I doubt a 3lb weight savings is at the top of their list when it comes to gear.

If it ain't broke, don't fix it. In the futre, the supply of surplus .303's will dry up and a replacement will be needed. We could buy something commercial from the States, but many politicians here would obviously want a 'made in Canada' solution. I for one wouldn't mind seeing some money spent on manufacturing new Enfields chambered in 7.62. That way the Rangers wold still be familiar with the new rifles and not lose any capability by going to a 5 round, Mauser style commercial rifle.

Also.... 'optional barrel triad mount'? WTF? Those even suck on the C7.

Also wondering about the proposal to upgrade the Ranger's Lee Enfield rifles with a scope....how well would a scope stand up to the climate of the north......as well as been bounced around on a Ski Doo..!..like Tyler mention's in his post....have the people who are wanting to upgrade the Ranger rifles spent anytime in the North..!

Perhaps the same system as the Lee Enfield NO.4 T sniper rifle...where the scope was easily removed...and still maintain the rifles zero...also retain the Lee Enfield's iron sights......your thoughts...?

Our government is so frugal I'm surprised they aren't re-arming our Rangers with the arsenal refinished Mosin Nagants that are so cheaply available at this time.

Since the burden of reasserting Canadian claims to the Arctic will continue to fall upon the Rangers,

This article is full of crap.
The Rangers do not/will not re-assert our claims to the Arctic. They do guide the regular force on it's SOV-OPs, but the day the Rangers are popping off rounds at inbound russian subs, well, the jig is up.

The above statement is not to belittle the Rangers. These guys kept us comfortable and alive during the Sov-op I went on above the Arctic circle. I hope to never be as cold again.

I agree that what is especially laughable about the article is that triad mount. What, pray tell, are you going to mount on there? Laser beams? Flashlights? It's too f-n cold up there for the batteries to work anyway.

When you think about how cheap the DND got with the upgrade of the C-7 family of rifles, I very much doubt we will see anything more than a reasonable commercial sporting rifle when the day comes to replace the Enfields. In the meantime, at least a Canadian tradition will remain.

I like this pic, how about some captions, mine is: "Hey you, keep away from my daughter, eh? lol! :D

To get back on topic I would not consider replacing my wood stocks on my .303's with Ramline stocks or even the ATI ones, an 'upgrade'.

how about, "get that crappy rail away from my Enfield, city boy"

Rangers using the Enfield is an example of something that isn't broken, don't fix it. The only rifle that has half a hope of surviving the way the Enfield does is the AIA, at about twice the price.

I can't think of any reason to replace the Enfield. Are we turning our rangers into mall ninjas? Oh I see, upgrades, why not just give them some M-305s?;)

Would be a better choice for the climate IMHO, and they have proven themselves in Lots of combat.
Besides the carbine come with a handy fold out Polar Bear defence bayonet. :D

There's alot more 7.62x54R around than 303. It's also cheaper than .308. Our government could make a rule that the Ranger's ammo does not need to abide to the 'non-mercuric primer' rule, and the Ranger's could be supplied with copius amounts of ex-Warsaw Pact ammo for pennies per round.
It actually would be very cost effective.:)
Strange but true.

You're kidding me right? 7.62 X 54 mm Russian?

I don't think even our penny-wise-dollar-extravagent poobahs are going to start looking to save money by replacing Enfields with Mosin-Nagents just to shoot cheap ammo. The amount of ammo the Rangers expend probably doesn't compare with the cost of a few Tim Horton's outlets in A-stan for our troops. If the Enfield source is drying up in country, the Govt. could always bring in a few pallets of those Italian surplus ones and have them refurbished.

I read this article a few weeks ago, what I did find interesting is that the Greenland Rangers were equipped with 10mm Glocks!!
