Unfired savage 99

It’s in .308 there is zero bluing loss that is just a glare from the light

Based on it having no bluing loss and it being 99E, I believe $600ish is realistic only because it's Unfired. These later 99E rifles were the economy versions of the 99. I bought one of mine in 2007 from original owner with 14 rounds through in mint shape for $350. I jumped on it thinking I got a deal. Turned out I did get a deal but nowhere near what I thought. It was valued at that time, around $400-450. I was told then , the E rifles were worth less due to non walnut wood and no cartridge counter etc. Again though, in the end it's worth what someone will pay for it.

That does not look like walnut to me... it appears to be a "dumbed down" version made for Sears... I would say, no collector value, and I can't see a shooter paying more than $600 for it, whether unfired or not.

No offense, but bases on your previous posts trying to figure out what model it is, you are far from an authority. One look told me it was an E and I don't consider myself an authority either, just a fella that has owned more than my share of 1895/1899/99 Savages. Joe and Blair are the Savage lever gurus.

It's not walnut, it's likely birch. The spool is probly aluminum rather than brass as well. Top dollar would be $500 for that rifle imo, and I'd rather have a "tomato stake", like Joe says, for that money. Truth is some of us wouldn't own a tang safety model unless it was a 250 with the fast twist barrel. :)

Well, it was far from 40 tries and I don't claim to be ####ing authority. The Forend threw me off because it is shaped like no E I had seen and the finish looked walnut on my iPad. I've owned a few myself and I have always been told that regardless of model, the post 1 million models really have no value other than as a hunting rifle. When I say $600, that is a top end guess and more than I would ever pay. Oh....and the spool is definitely aluminum. All the E models had aluminum spools.

I actually came back to the thread to delete that part of my post, but not much point now that you've quoted it. I had already amended the 40 tries comment, it was an exaggeration obviously. I realize you were just trying to be helpful. The confidence in your misinformation struck a nerve.

That is not a 99E. I have 2 of them and they don't resemble this one. This one looks to have detachable mag.It looks like a 99c. Definitely has walnut and the strange Forend of this particular cmodel . I always found that Forend looked out of place.
Also, no 99E (economy) would be worth $800 under any circumstance. Based on condition, I would say the pictured rile is worth whatever the OP can get but to me, $600ish if it is really Unfired. It seems to have odd wear for an Unfired rifle?

There is a saying when it comes to Savage lever iron. "Never say never"

In my opinion all unfired condition 99's have potential collector value. Even though its post million production it still is a 99 and would fit right in a complete collection.

For whatever its worth, in my decade old version of the Standard catalog of firearms it lists the 99E as having collectors appeal. It may not be worth a mint but surely worth more than a regular used 99E.

Presseded checkering birch stock something everyone should have in there collection to remind themselves never to buy crap again . Savage was not the only company to go that route in that time frame

Sure wish I'd kept the 99a that I bought new back in 1980. It was in .375 Win and was a sweet handling bush rifle. The tang safety was flimsy shyte though.
This one just sold at 1500 US and they bring more than that.

Interesting thread.

An E is an E is an E, it stood for "economy", they used cheap wood (usually birch) no round indicator, no tang safety (old school lever safety) and pressed checkered. Even with it's condition a post-mil 99 isn't going to fetch a real high price. I think the $600 estimates are on target, maybe even $50 high.

The thing I really found surprising is the amount of guys that stated that if it was in 7mm-08 it would be a fortune. They're right, it would be a one of a kind gun because they never made the 99E in 7mm-08, it was only made in the 99C and that was only from 1981-1984.

A buddy of mine had on in 308 and said it kicked pretty good. so he changed the barrel to 243. loves it . that does look like the cheaper model . I could have bought a Savage model 99 in 300 Savage many years ago from a buddy's Dad but passed it up . he wanted $350 for it . she was the deluxe model with the round counter and internal mag . I said to heck with the odd ball caliber . max I'd say is $500 .
