Does anyone out ther have a Merwin Hulbert? 44 pocket model? well any really. Im curious as to how well the action works and the whole reloading mechanism. Size comparison as well...ive seen many pics of the guns but never next to anything i know like a colt or remington. Any one have one that can chat with me about them?

I'm kinda curious too. I know they swing to the side, but I've never seen it in action.
There is supposed to be a company working on bringing M&H repros to the market sometime in the next couple of years too.
 
I think its kind of more of a "twist". Push a button and the barrel twists to the side and moves foreward to eject the cases. Push another button and the whole barrel comes off. The selective loading is nice as well. Use the loading gate on the side or reload the whole cylinder at once. Im curious as to how small the 44 pocket frames are...ive had a couple of british bulldogs in 450 and 442...with such a small frame they were hard to hold on to. I wonder if the MH's with 44 russian would be hard to handle as well.
 
I have one :D

Its a 38 cal one DA and is still a perscribed antique.
It has the same sideways twist that the 44 have.
Mine is a minty one with preal grips.
really a work of art. the way there made is unbeliveable!
The better half likes it more than i do and it has mint peal grips i will get a picture up of it!

But i have seen inside others theres nothing that fancy about there action!
they still have a hammer and a hand and a main spring.
The part thats diffrent is the way they open and eject the empty cases.
the barrel turns to the right as ya point the gun.
but you gota push a button frist.
then the barrel pulls forward and all the empty cases get pulled out. But any un shot cartridges stay put and only the empty ones fall out.
the barrel comes back with suction on its shaft ya can hear it!

Its the only antique revolver that sucks :D

Honestly i look at new revolvers all the time and think what a pile of crap!
The workmanship and finish on these old guns is hard to beat

Heres a couple pics of My 38 Cal M&H antique.
I use a 38 cal wad cutter and 38 S&W cases full of pyrodex.
they cut nice holes in stuff :shotgun:
It has a folding hammer to so it fits in your pocket just so nice!

I've seen quite a few pics of the M&H with the topstraps, but have never seen a pic of one with the action open ejecting the cases. Read about it lots - but reading about something and seeing it are 2 different things.

When reading about the possibility of repro M&Hs, that's one issue that comes up - how do you produce something nowadays with the high standards and fitting of the original? Without it costing your left nut anyways.
 
Dingus, Im not sure if you held that thunderer you had...i love the feel of those birdhead grips. How does the MH compare to the thunderer in size and feel in the hand?
 
Its smaller but fits in even my club like sasquach hands :D

Thanks for the pics Dingus. I take it that the gap between the cylinder and the recoil shield (when it's open) is just enough for fired brass to drop out of, but not enough for a loaded cartridge?

Yes the grip on the M&H is smaller than the thunder but it holds very nice even if your hands are bigger than normal.
Its DA is slick and it can be emptyed prety darn fast.
Great defensive revolver. as i said it fits into a pocket just nice.
its 5 shots.
I want a 32 M&H 7 shot one with pearls.
I beleave the 32 M&H is not on the NO List so i should be able to get one.
im hopeing anyhoo ;)
 
Well, looking at the "no list" and the calibers that the MH's were made in...it seems that they made them in the different variations chambered in 44win (44-40), 44 russian, 44MH, 38MH, and 32MH. So if your 38MH is ok then i imagine a 32MH should be as well. Incidentally...the info i have shows that the 32MH has a case length same as a 32 magnum...lots of BP packed in there. That would be a great one to shoot.

Im thinking of searching out a pocket army version in 44russian or 44MH.
Pocket army's were only available in the 2nd 3rd and 4th models. 2nd model had the open top, 3rd model had topstrap w/round barrel and 4th model had topstrap with fluted barrel similar to the Smith and Wesson Russian's.
