Danish FKF M1 Garand with welded on scope mounts?

This is one of the Garands that the Danes modified for the installation of night vision sights. The welded on mounts look unsightly but they do not affect safety or functionality.

I bought one of these receivers, complete with rail between the 2 welded on brackets, about 16 yrs ago and have been hoping to find a Danish surplus night vision sight, but no luck to this point.

Would you happen to have a picture of this rail?
Perhaps I could replicate one and mount a scope.

^ Well at least it's not a bubba rifle!

Isn't most NV equipment export limited? I would have thought it would be nearly impossible to get one from another country...

It might not be a bubba rifle but geez, could the Danes not have found a better welder!!! Those welds look like sh**...

I'm still deciding on whether to keep it or send it back for a refund. The dealer is sending now me a postage return which is very nice of them.
Comments like this make me want to box it up and send it back lol. I won't have the time until the weekend though.

I have heard the mounts were for a night vision sight.
Don't know if this is correct. If it is, I would leave it as is. If it was bubba at work, I would swap in another receiver.

IMHO it wasn't done by bubba. Those mounts are machined and I'm willing to bet a special jig was made to keep them in place while being welded. Difficult area to just clamp them on separately. My hunch is purpose built for the purpose tiriaq mentions.

Personally I'd try to make or have made some kind of base that would allow a conventional scope to be used on it. Given that these welded brackets were done in-service by people that knew what they were doing you should look at them as a plus over a regular Garand. get her set up for a good scope and if you still don't like it it will make it easier to sell.

ditto. The Danes knew what there were doing. It's not exactly slightly, but if it works, who cares. I would drop that beauty off with a qualified gunsmith and have a regular rail installed. Add a decent scope, and you'll be outshooting other Garands!

Good Day All,
I've been familiar with the Danish M1 night vision rifle mounts for a number of years and like most, don't have a clear understanding of the scope used. However, I recently returned from the German Wehrtechnische Studiensammlung (Defense Technology Study Collection) in Koblenz where a fairly extensive night vision devices exists to include G1 & G3 rifles with night vision scopes. Assuming a degree of cooperation between NATO partners, its possible that a similar (if not nearly the same) type of Night scope was used by the Danish military on their M1's.
If anyone has a chance, the Wehrtechnische Studiensammlung in Koblenz should be seen. Set aside at least three hours to appreciate the varied displays and remarkable collection of small arms.
I look forward to Purple's return and him posting pictures of his receiver and mount.
Regards,
Mike

More questions.
This tag inside the stock is numbered to the rifle as is the stock. Anyone know what it means?
The Skytte is VSOMR very faint

Skytte is shooter. Name of soldier goes in here.

Yhis is a sticker to record the battle sight zero of the Garand at 300 meters.

Serial of rifle

Name of soldier

Kampviser 300- Battle site zero at 300 meters

16 clicks elevation, 0 ckicks windage.

Yes it is long dove tail mount down the center " in a notch " but not a standard dove tail. I would post a pic but Photo bucket is causing me issues right now.

I think the AN/PVS-1 Night Vision scope was what it was intended for. The scope could be bolted on. The AN/PVS-2 Night Vision slides on to a special dovetail mount.

This is the AN/PVS-1 on an M14.

I thought I should add an update to this post. After receiving an offer to buy a receiver I sent the rifle and receiver to Nick at Vulcan Gun Refinishing.
To make the story short, Nick swapped the receiver and did a complete refinish and cleaning. After receiving it I took it to the range and it functions perfectly. It is a very accurate rifle.
I am keeping the original receiver with the rifle in case a future owner needs to "restore" it or wants that funky night vision look.
Hope the pics show up.

I just noticed the post and know the answer. It is an arsenal modification by the Danes for some large and heavy Night Vision Scope. They chose good rifles and went ahead with the mod. Ones like yours turn up periodically, and within certain circles are well known.

BTW, I'll buy or trade for that rifle if you are unhappy with it. Watch your inbox for a PM.

I'd love to find a Danish NV set-up to install on my Danish Beretta receiver with welded on mounts. A friend, who's since moved to the big range in the sky, helped to process the incoming shipments of Danish Garands to Lever Arms years ago. He told me that a lot of the NV modified rifles had the earlier lock-bar rear sights retro fitted to them. He also mentioned that the Danes had shipped the rifles and bolts separately, which caused a big exercise in bolt swapping to set up the rifles with correct headspace.

Thanks to Purple...here is what the rail looked like on the Danish receivers. There are a few of the receivers around but had not yet seen what went on the two welded mounts.
