Just got back from 2 weeks cruising to Hawaii and then 6 days in Vegas staying at my folks' place.

I tried TimK (of OSA .. Operational Shooting Assoc fame) 's advice : Soak the entire AR15 bolt (bolt carrier optional) in a bottle of USGI (1968 vintage, old school) bore cleaner. That stuff comes in 2 oz. and 4 oz IIRC bottles that I used to get for a few dollars at gun shows. Real cheap.

I used to buy lots of it, back when I was shooting my M14's and M1A's at NRA High Power rifle matches. Then once I switched to the AR platform for my competitions, I no longer had much use for it (Kroil, Remington Bore Cleaner, CLP, Militec, Shooters Choice were my favorites with the AR).... :eek:

TimK suggests: Soak the bolt in a prescription / medicine bottle tall enough to sit the bolt inside the solution. That's it.

I left a bolt in the Bore Cleaner for 2 weeks and 3 weeks respectively.

BOTH bolts were removed, wiped dry and then the carbon build up scraped off with a box cutter blade. Almost as soft as pudding, this was the bolt that soaked for 3 weeks. :dancingbanana:

There you go... minimum muscle work, maximum WOW Factor :eek: and easy to clean carbon buildup problem. :evil:

Good thing your family is already half-grown up. That old school USGI crud eater is probably 8/10ths pure DNA sequencing realigning chemical soup and 2/10ths mystery juju juice.

I use the MPro7 cleaning stuff (its not a hazmat and Brownells can ship it via Airmail) spray - wipe

Okay... many of you are clearly and effectively convincing me to avoid the carcinogenic USGI bore cleaner... I'm sold..

Where do I find (locally would be nice, like Cambodian Tire) MPro7 or Slip2000 or other carbon removers ?
 
I never clean the bolt or the rest of the AR for that matter, heavy lube and pull through the barrel is all that is needed, it won't pass inspection but doesn't stop working either.

Haha ! great advice Reaper... I've been doing the same with my AR for the last 500-800 rds. It's like the Energizer bunny... just keeps on going ;)

I guess that when it comes to the point that the forward assist becomes necessary, then it's time to scrap off some carbon :p
 
I've fired 2500+ rounds out of an AR-type platform without cleaning, except for an external wipe-off of the bolt. (Ok, it was a C-7...) I did it to see when it would start jamming.

It didn't.

When the crap gets thick enough on the bolt I just chip it off with my pocket knife, I run a brush on the carrier and inside to remove any loose crap, oil and shoot. I don't depend my life on my guns but they haven't failed yet!!
