Since we are discussing efficiency these days, the reasonable 300 Magnums.

Choosing one it would be 300 wm.

Have had four 308nm, down to one, a Browning hi power. The Norma is ballistically a 300wsm, in a long action, no factory ammo, and with hard to find brass. I suppose once brass is found, this reloader only caliber is a reasonable 300. Sizing other 2.5 mag brass to .308 is a obvious contingency, but i have many 2.5 mags so prefer to stay with actual accurate head stamps.

Years ago the gun store near Guildford in Surrey had new brass for $60/100 and factory ammo north of $100.

As to the efficiency argument, i dont buy it. Who cares if it burns 5-10 grains more powder. The earlier thread about energy/grain was always going to be won by a medium case ....308ish.....
Perhaps efficiency matters to target shooters buying powder in 8 lb jugs. But i am more a hunter, i would not care about the extra 20+ grains burnt by overbore magnums. What interests me is if the recoil bothers accuracy.

Have had the 300 Win Mag and didn't really care for it.
Do like my 300 WSM, a custom left hand Rem 700. Easy on the shoulder, accurate (1/2 MOA) and has been effective on all of the big game I have used it to harvest to date (5 moose, 4 elk, a bear and a wolf), with both the Winchester 180gr Power Point and handloaded 180 gr AccuBonds at 2978 fps. None have required more than one shot. Shortest shot 70 yards, longest 242 yards.

300 H&H, 308 Norma, 300 Winchester all drive 180 gr bullets past 3000 fps.

So,.... ?

How must faster that 3000fps should one expect with an H&H? All the manuals I have just barely touch 3K with some loads less.

Looks like IMR4350 is the first powder I should try. What say you? Resized some 375 brass as per your instruction. It worked perfectly. :)

Please tell me that you did not put that barrelled action into the Franken-stock!?!?!

I really like my 300 Win Mag shooting 215 Bergers at 3000 fps. Don't know if that's efficient or not but it sure hammers the game. As far as an efficient 30 cal I would think the 300SS by Sherman Wildcats would be up there. It will probably out perform most in a true short action with high BC bullets. The WSM will beat it in a mid length action, but in a true short action the SS design will be hard to beat. I am in the process of putting together a 6 Dasher hunting gun. From what I see this is a very efficient round. 105 gr bullets at 2900+ with only 30-32 gr of powder.

Is this the Frankenstock you refer to? ..... If so, then the answer is yes! :)

It's even more "Franken" now then when it was on the 35Whelen. Beater 700 gloss blued BDL magnum action with a 30-06 SS SPS rechambered bbl with an old Vari-X 2.5-8 in Weaver mounts using resized 375H&H brass.

With a .300 H&H, I'd try H-1000; according to the Hodgdon web page, backed by 81 grs of H-1000 the .300 H&H produces 3100 fps with a 180.

That's a pretty rockin' load. This rifle only weighs 7.5lbs scoped given the Brown Precision so might have to take it a bit easy till I get used to it.

Might have to look for some H-1000 in the mean time. I have on hand some IMR4350, H4831sc, WW760. Also have a bit of IMR4831 but use that in the 257Roberts.

Yikes... ;)

There's a lot of efficiency in just getting one caliber and using it for practically everything. Any of the .300s can take a pretty good crack at that, but the easy way is the 300 Win. 3150 fps is within easy reach, and 3200-3250 might be had if you aren't hung up on long brass life. Its practically the performance cartridge for people who aren't very interested in guns. All you really need to know is it'll work, and if something works marginally better in some area rest assured that it wont be by much. My RUM would only beat it by 150 fps and that was with a cavalier attitude to case life and a barrel that died at 600 rounds. My Weatherbys don't beat it at all. Near as I can tell, the extra powder goes to recoil and noise. There's a practical limit to how much powder can be shoved down a hole.

For the most part the other 300s appeal to people who either fight off or have succumed to the urge to show up with a 16 gauge. Nothing wrong with being different or wanting to do things the hard way I suppose.

The WSM is the practical, efficent way to stomp a .308 Win to death.
