Recommend me a scope.

Leupold VX-3 3.5-10x40 B&C This is one great piece of glass, and can be had
for a reasonable cost. [options VX-2 3-9x40, VX-3 4.4-14x40]
I have several of the former on hunting rifles, and really like them. Dave.

I was used to US Optics, Nightforce, Trijicon... that sort of thing for my longer range stuff. Never bothered much with basic hunting scopes.

Eventually I decided to build some lighter weight basic hunting rifles and a big clunky Nightforce was obviously not appropriate and started checking out various typical hunting offerings.

As Boomer and others have already said, it's tough to beat something like a Leupold vx3i in the power range you require. The glass is surprisingly good for the price and the tracking is solid. About the only complaint I have about Leupold is sometimes I'd like to see a little bit more reticule choice, but I'd still keep it simple, it's a hunting scope, not a long range super secret squirrel sniper scope.

Go for a Leupold, you won't regret it.

I use Leupold, mostly VX-2's as they are fine quality for the price and lightweight
I do have a VX-III, solidly-built older scope, but I find the view a tad dim ...
(perhaps because they didn't have such efficient lens multi-coatings then?)

I used to own a Nikon Monarch 3 3-12x42SF, very nice scope, I really should have kept it.

I also own Bushnell Elite, still bnib, which I must admit surprised me.
For the price, the quality seems to be very good, and the view is so bright and clear!!
and for the wet west coast, the Rainguard feature would be useful.

Many here spend $2000 or more on their glass. I'm a $500 scope guy.
You probably get what you pay for.

+1 for the Bushnell Elite.

Although Bushnell has done away with the Elite line, you can probably still find it stocked at some stores or online, as they only just recently made the change to their product lineup. I have a Bushnell Elite 6500 series scope on my main hunting rifle and I love it. As others have said its very bright and clear.

Bear hunting is a close quarter affair. Low magnification is in order. Deer hunting is usually short to medium range, and coyote is long range. 4-12X is a nice long range scope, but far from ideal for bear hunting, unless you do not mind which part of the bear's fur you are shooting at. a 2-8 or 2-10 would be a more sensible scope. I would highly recommend the recently discontinued Nikon Monarch 3 in 2-8X32, if you can still find one. Compact size, clear glass and sharp picture.

I picked up a Viper HS 2.5-10x44 which is a 30mm tube and the field of view and flexibility is excellent. I have not compared it against a normal Viper in 3-9x40 but it is definitely a step up from my Zeiss Terra 3-9x42.

Try to find the original Elite, the Japanese Bausch and Lomb 3-9 X 50. I had one on my #1 7 remag and sold it with the rifle in error. I bought another on eBay, but someone must have driven over it in a truck. I must say my three Nikons have not let me down. Especially the African German #4!

I agree with you Dave, I just bought a VX3i 3.5x10x40 with a duplex for $497.00 delivered from Prophet River 3 weeks ago I only have leupolds no problems ever .

I just picked up a Burris Veracity 3 x15 x 50mm at Dante Sports (site sponsor) for a great price that included a 4.5 x 16 x 42mm...

Not my first Burris, but first at this quality. Check out the reviews.

Patrick.

I own a Diamondback and a Viper and I don't care for either. My vote is for Leupold Vx3i or Vx5hd. Equivalent in pricing as well.
