Really feel the need to post that?

Not a deal breaker, but seeing as there are two mostly AR like options and a couple other kind of AR like options, and the OP listed "AR looking" as an important factor, the suggestion of the overrated mini 14 series is a stretch.

I just ordered the IWI X 95 in 5.56. I know it's not an AR 15 style riffle buy but i wasn't happy from the rifles i saw out there. The most important for me was the non restricted class and also the 5.56 caliber. I think the X95 will be a great reliable rifle. Thanks for all your help.

I also mentioned the wk180 on the first page, nothing wrong with the mini 14. Find something else to other then being a troll.

Good choice.

I currently own two options in the 5.56mm non-restricted category that you may find interesting. They are not AR's to be sure but are just as fun in my experience. I have a Norinco Type 97 now before you all groan my rifle has both the FTU and LHG mods and it is a great shooter (though these rifles I hear can be hit and miss no pun intended). If you want to spend a little more money there is the HK SL8-4, just bought mine from Wolverine (Great people there btw) and it is a very slick unit, almost all polymer yet still manages to feel like a real firearm. This rifle can out shoot me, and not to blow my own horn but I am an alright shot. The thumb hole stock is a bit weird for me as I have never had a rifle with one before but it is not uncomfortable. It is everything you would expect from an HK rifle except it is a short stroke gas piston and not a delayed blowback like HK is famous for. You could get a G36 that is civilian legal but unless you have $8-9K laying around I would not go that way. The SL8 not really a tactical rifle but is a rifle based on the G36 that was made for the civilian market and it now comes in Black instead of that stupid grey colour they originally came in to get around the US Assault weapons ban. The Canadian version has the double stack mags (not Single Stack like US models) and the G36 forend. I can't wait to try it out on a few coyotes this summer. Just another option if you are still looking.

a lot of good makes out there
alberta tactical makes some great products
buy canadian if you can to keep the bucks up here
i laugh how the mention of a non restricted tax
ive always seen it as a tax for the enjoyment of using it in the field to hunt or plink with

A lot of companies are making NR receivers that take AR parts but theyre extremely expensive

I guess much depends on what your interpretation of expensive is. With a minuscule market in Canada to bring ANY rifle that is specifically dedicated to the Canadain market is going to be more expensive than 1 that is mass produced for worldwide markets.
Welcome to Canada!!

If you've got deep enough pockets (for the non-restricted tax, LOL) and aren't afraid to build your own then have a look at Alberta Tactical Rifle Supply's Modern Sporter receiver set.

Ever stop to think that it might not be a "tax" and that you may actually be getting a better product.
Just because they look similar doesn't mean they're made the same or of the same quality.

If you'd actually ever held a quality rifle next to a cheap rifle you'd understand.
