.....and the Ruger Hawkeye saga continues

Yeah Rick, i free floated it from the tip of the foretock back to the recoil lug.
I am going to step up my recipes now in .5 increments and see if she tightens up. I can't see that happenning as shots 2,3 and 4 are tight with the first one always the flier no matter wht powder. Its gotta be a harmonics issue i would think. Or maybe she'll get better as i put more rounds down the pipe?? I have also experimented with the barrel fouled and the barrel clean so lets take that out of the equation as well.

Oops! Sorry guys.

In that case, I would try a hotter primer, or perhaps the factory mainspring is a bit weak. That can cause vertical stringing as well.

Is the flyer always low?

a long shot, but have you tried shooting two consecutive groups with the same powder and bullet? Once in a while I get a flier when I swithc loads, more form different bullet than different powder though.

I'd go all the way up to 57.5 of H4350 and a 180

...............This is the first rifle i have ever bought that needs all this done out of the box though. A new rifle shouldn't need all that to be capable. I am also kind of fussy though i guess. It shoots the 168 grain Nosler balistic silver tips at a consistant 1.27" which should do okay for this fall.

maybe just me, but I'd sooner spend a couple hours bedding a new rifle than wonder if big groups are the load or the rifle.

In that case, and this is just me talking, sometimes when I get careless on the sandbags and the rifle is not in exactly the same position from shot to shot...I get a flier low like that.

I had one rifle that would send the cold bore shot 2" away from the subsequent ones every time. Now by that I mean coldbore = first shot of the day.

Since the coldbore shot is the critical one for hunting, I zeroed for that shot, and didn't worry about the 2" for the subsequent ones, if needed.

Well tonight will be the second night in a row with a 24 of Kokanee gone and i am kinda tired of ####in with it. I am either going to sell it tonight or throw it in the Macleod river. I am opting for the later as i am half pissed tonight and i want to be able to point as i drive over the bridge and say "thats where i threw that ####ty Hawkeye overboard"

.....naturally i will need a designated driver tonight and i will be the tosser.
