Savage Mk II failure to extract

Got my Savage Mk II g out to the range for the first time yesterday. What a fun little rifle to shoot, and very accurate too!! My only concern with it was it failed to extract on about %30 of rounds. Removing the mag, and cycling the action again cleared the round, but this was annoying to deal with.

I was using Winchester M22 ammo, could this be an ammo problem or an issue with the extractor?

Scroll down a page or two this issue was covered very well with fixes. For me i switched to American Eagle and my problems went away. Perhaps we should have a savage mark ii sticky.

Edit now that i think back i had problems with the m22 as well. I often find mine works better with copper dipped bullets vs lead waxed.

The answer is yes. Try different ammo. Winchester is not highly regarded in this part of the gopher patch. And YouTube for extractor tuning. Best wishes, you do have a decent rifle.

I also bought some federal rimfire ammo, will give that a try on my next range trip and see if that solves the problem.

Try the federal ammo and maybe a good clean of the bolt face before doing anything else. Every savage I have ever had has hated Winchester M22 and Whitebox. When I got my first MK2 I had the same issue, ammo change and now it runs flawlessly.

Sounds good. I’ll try the federal ammo, and I’ll clean the boltface before heading out. Too bad if it is the only thing wrong with the ammo because it was fairly accurate and shot well.

nothing new with the extractor not working , simple fix . clean the bolt and remove extractor claws clean , reassemble extractor ,, very common with this rifle,

My mkII don't like Blazer wax coated ammo. I start having extraction problems after 20 rds on a clean chamber. I see bad reviews of the Winchester white box ammo. In my rifle they are wonderful...lol. My brother has the same rifle and results are horribles with Win white box. Each riffle even of the same model don't like the same ammo brands. I stay away from waxed bullets in my savage. Win white box or Federal Champion.

I’ll try my federal on Wednesday and report back. I checked the chamber and it appears to be wearing in the correct spot so I think the extractor has the correct angle. I did notice the end of casing flaring on on shots and they actually required a screw driver to gently pry out.

Interesting, I've got a heavy barrelled Mk.II that doesn't seem to have any issue with a variety of ammo types. I've ran about five different types of .22LR through her with no hiccups.

The ends of some of the casings bulged towards the bullet after firing which I think was making them grip the chamber.

But have you tried winchester?

Wildcats and the 555/333 packs don't fire or extract reliably in mine. Cci mini mags always fire but sometimes don't extract, will usually extract after a second pull of the trigger. Everything else (including cci standard and stingers) have worked without issue, haven't tried m22 though I don't buy winchester anymore.

Yep. Wildcats were one of the first types I ran through her, fired first try every time - and always extracted easily, has a nice snap to it as well. Also ran CCI Quiet .22, and Blazer with no issues. Had a few magazines of some sort of higher end stuff run through as well (can't remember the brand, didn't buy it, just had it given to me to finish a box), other than the wax making it a bit of a pain to load the magazine, it all went bang and was extracted easily.
