Hey guys!!!

I am looking to start to stack some ammo for my Stag 10 for the summer/winter...ideally wanting to get quite a few rounds (2,000+) while I still can/it is "easily" available.

***I MIGHT get into reloading down the road...or stick to just later selling my once fired brass like I have for years...so brass quality/primer type is NOT a very high priority for me.***

I am looking at either getting either the Hirtenberger surplus stuff or the "Federal Lake City" M80 ball stuff...both are close enough to the same price per 500 for me not to worry about a few bucks here or there.

I have heard a lot of good about the Chinese surplus (but no brass/re-loadable cases) but it all but seems to be "gone"? I have seen some on the EE but mostly out west and they are wanting local sales only or shipping will be wayyy too much $$$ or the odd guy wanting $2/shot for his "rare" ammo.

I am looking for good, reliable, safe ammo...constant enough for practical use from 50-500 yards, but mostly 50-300 yards. I shoot mostly irons or use a 1-6x scope so I don't need (or want to pay for) match grade ammo and I shoot targets between 12"-18" in diameter.

---

Any PERSONAL EXPERIENCE with either or? Not internet hearsay or a word from a friend of a friend?

My only hesitations on Hirtenberger is seeing some of the cases have corrosion or old cardboard bos stuck to them...I don't want it to get "worse" overtime or imped on function and safety of the ammo.

And with the Federal stuff, it is hard to find NOT in 500 round count boxes so testing it out before hand seems more difficult.

Thanks!!!

- Black

***EDIT*** I really wanted to make this a poll, zerooo idea how to tho?!

I have fired the hirtenberger stuff through two different stags and it's reasonable accurate and cycles nicely. It's not bad stuff for the price.

Read the box before you buy it though. I have seen some that is berdan primed and not reloadable.

This ^^^ X2 cheapest 762x51 you will find I have a BCL 102 and it runs great and is pretty accurate. the next cheapest bulk is the American eagle 150 FMJ BT in the ammo cans. but reloading is by far the cheapest way to go with 308...

I would go with Hirtenberger over Lake City. I shoot different rifles but based on my shooting, my groups are better with the Hirt. If you want to reload, get 1980 Hirtenberger or more recent... Otherwise, you will end up with Berdan primed brass. Cheers!

There are many previous threads on this issue. Try using the search function to avoid another rehash....

I did...and many, many comments with at best, second hand knowledge and then those who look down at others who shoot anything other then $50+/box or handloads or my personal favorite "why not just get a .22LR!!!"

I don't have a Stag10 but made much ammo testing with M14 and RFB.

The Norinco was not accurate enough for serious practice and longer range. And steel case is harder on the ejector.

Hirtenberger is good for the price. Despite slight discoloration it run fine.

PMC Bronze 147gr FMJBT on sale can reach the price of HP surplus and shoots much better. Sub-moa in some of the semi-auto I had.

Don't have a Stag 10 (yet), but I've been quite happy with the Hirtenberger boxer primed stuff. I've used a couple cases of 1983 production in my M14-type and ran some through a bolt action as well, then I reload the brass. For the price I think it's the best thing going.

Just a few days back Tenda had the 240 round packs on for $189.99.

Bought one a couple of weeks back, and then decided to grab one more just because it's a pain finding cheap .308, at least locally.

Hirt is my go to practice round in my Stag, and in my 308 savage bolt gun.
Post 1980 is three stake primer, but reloadable. Good quality brass for reloading practice rounds.
I still have some Norinco (Chinese) rounds which miraculously are a bit more accurate in my stag except not always consecutive.
(Ie: 4 rounds within 2 moa, and one flyer) If you are near Ottawa I can cut you a deal on some.

The Norinco will NOT sit right in my 308 bolt gun. Really have to push the bolt hard to close it.

The reason why I practice with cheap surplus (and why I love the 308 caliber) is that my hunting rounds are Barnes TTSX at 3$ per round.
Also tried some really crappy Barnaul russian stuff. I might have been drinking when I purchased these... Just, don't do it.

By the way, I never heard of Magtech, or Rampart.
But pricing looks pretty good. I would be tempted to try a box of 50 at 35$, and if it works well, get the 1000 round case at 680$.
That is very close to the same price as feeding my 1911 45 acp.

If you do try them, I think we would all like a range review

Norinco surplus turns my stag 10 to a single shot rifle. Hirt is my go to with no issues and accurate enough for my abilities.

So I am not the only one... Mine cycles 90% of the time. (4 out of 5)
My stag used to be a 12 lbs single shot rifle until I properly aligned and tightened the gas block. (Loose and off center from the company)

I see it says berdan primed.

Yeah, it also says it's reloadable. If in doubt, give them a call to clarify. I'm sure it's an error one way or the other. My bet is on it being reloadable ie boxer primed. They move an awful lot of ammo. The old berdan primed ammo is long gone.
