So I'm slowly getting things together for prs and was curious what everyone uses to carry around all their gear. Doesn't seem like a regular range bag would work and seems like most people use a backpack. Any suggestions on what I should be looking for?

Thanks

Maybe not PRS, but i like doing field shooting in the woods or at a range.
Initially had a 5.11 rush 24, works well but couldn’t carry everything.
Changed to rush 72, can now carry spotting scope, raingear, 3 shooting bags, food & water, on top of the standard small tools/ammo/magazines/notepads...

My 3 bags are PRS bags, if I’d go out and shoot PRS i could just hang the pump pillow under the bag.

There is not a back pack made that is too big for PRS.

This is not really true - SH has a very big discussion on packs. The MR 3DAP is highly recommended but $$$. I went with an Arcteryx Khard 30 (renamed to Assualt pack or something...). 5.11 has some budget options but all the popular recommendations are in the 30L range.

I am not a tactical person but the "3 day" packs is really all you need. The bigger the pack the more crap you carry and you probably don't need most of it.

Any 30-40 litre pack is really enough.

Ammo, a bag or two (or 3 I guess), some rain gear, small tool kit, spotter, and the tripod strapped to the side is all you really need.

I have an older Eberlestock X1A1 Euro with a built in scabbard that I have been using for years between hunting and match use. I find it's almost perfect, but the pocket setup is a little lacking for matches. The scabbard has come in super handy for carrying my tripod/spotting scope rather than lashing it to the outside, but I have never used it for actually carrying my match rifle.

I am with Ryan on this one, get a pack big enough to carry 150 rounds of ammo, a shooting bag or two, all the shooting basics (Kestrel, ear protection, armboard/data card holder), spare mags and some snacks. No need to go too big or you'll end up carrying too much!

I’m currently running a eberlestock gunslinger 2 pack and that pac is more than big enough to carry my gear and food. Just make sure the pack fits your frame if you are carrying it for long periods of time.

I'm always doin' things on a budget, so I've picked up several Large gym bags with shoulder straps at yard sales. One for basics - First aid kit, Eye & ears, spotting scope, couple hundred rnds of 7.62 - 223 - 22LR, Gerber multi-tool,rags, pens, staple gun. Other bags for 'whatever' I think of - usually only 1 goes out at a time. Smaller bags if only 1 gun going out - The range I use is 30 miles away so I try to take 'possibles'. I have backpaks but what you 'want' is always on the bottom. The gym bag I usually use is about 14" x 14" x 24" so thing are easier to find.

For matches (PRS/NRL/RTC) I use a Mystery Ranch 3DAP. I can fit everything I need in it: 100+ rds of ammo, tools, binos, food and water, rain gear, misc stuff like bipod extensions, small cleaning kit. I strap my tripod+spotter to the side of the pack and clip a fat bag and Gamechanger to the outside. Since you can stow the waist strap, it isn't in the way of the mags on my belt (PRS/NRL) or my battle belt (RTC). Not cheap but pretty much perfect for the task at hand and I've had (and have) an absurd amount of packs from a different occupation.

Most matches you are only moving 10-25 yards between individual stages.

On the other hand, while some ranges you are practically operating off the tailgate of your pickup, other places you park and move a fair ways away from your vehicle for the day, so you need capacity and decent comfort.

For regular PRs matches i use a 2400 ci kifaru, more or less same size as most ‘3-day” or “assault” pack.

Field matches where you move several miles during the day I use a mystery ranch crew-cab and bring everything I can think of.

I tend to run as little gear as I can. I use a TAG RAID pack with two utility pouches on the outside

Food and water laser. Binos or spotter.
A puffy jacket to fill up the space and a front/rear bag
I use my pack as a pump pillow/ space filler if needed.

I have been using my tripod for a lot of rear support lately.

Tend to run I would pack on a hunt.

For Matches I use either my 5.11 RUSH 24 pack or my Eagle Industries 3-Day Assault pack. If I am going to be walking a fair bit I will take the Eagle as it has a nice padded hip belt and the 5.11 doesn't.

I have been running a Eberlestock half track for the past 2 seasons. They are around 32L with lots of molle to attach stuff to on the outside. What I look for in a pack is a full front opening zipper so I can lay my pack down and get to everything. this way I dont have to worry about taking everything out to get to the last piece of kit at the bottom. in my pack I usually carry a bullet binder with 120 rounds, solo sac, rear bag, rain jacket, food, sling, and a drop pouch I keep all my stage stuff in like COF, kestrel, pen, etc. in the top pouch is phone, keys, ear buds, etc. In side pouches are repair tools, rain cover for rifle, water, and tripod. All loaded up it is pushing 30lb. I find the bigger pack you have the more crap you carry. 32L class packs are a good balance. Try not to cheap out on a pack you definetly get what you pay for. I drug a deer out of the bush with this pack and a rope tied to the bottom molle a couple years ago with no issue.

cheers
Ryan
