Hello I was wondering if a converted M96/38 1900 Obendorf with a 23.5”barrel will fit into a regular M 96 stock. Would the difference just be length? It looks to be just an altered M96.
Cheers

Thanks! That’s what I wanted to hear. Do you know if that’s period correct to the 1938 modification or was there a special stock for the older converts? I hear a 1938 built M 38 won’t fit right in the old stock. It’s hard to believe the original M96 1900 dated receiver(37000 range)was even modified. I would have never guessed. It’s a stepped barrel with all parts numbered the same. I wonder if it was cut down or a new barrel installed? It has the insetted dial rear site and a funny front site.
Cheers

There is a difference in the stocks, 96 stock is longer . The rear barrel band on both rifles is located at same distance from receiver. Just the front of stock has to be shortened.

I have an 1899 Obie 96 sporter, excellent shooter, only cut at the front sight so looong barrel on her. Many of the CG63 rifles used very early receivers, not sure why....

So, it’s doable but looks goofy or it won’t function correctly? I’ve got a 24” m96. Is there a way of telling if it’s a cut down bbl or a M38 bbl?Is the bbl step layout different ? It’s pretty mysterious. I thought I had the long one. Lol

Model 96/38. Unfortunately, front end has the original front sight removed and a sporter sight installed. Looks like the original post was knocked off and then the sporter sight was probably drilled and tapped on? Could possibly be cleaned up and the original sight sleeve sweated off and a new one soldered on.

Might be do-able? Depends on your skill. Gunsmith would probably cost too much to make worthwhile.

as said it s an m96-38 action .The swedes converted many m96 rifles to m38 specs .the m38-96 will have a streight bolt handle and the rear site fitted with the varsite micrometer rear site .i have a 38 stock if your interested.
