Had the j-lock on my 870 engaged. Lost the key. Can it be unlocked without the key, screw driver doesn't seem to work. Any ideas? Anyone know where I can get a spare key?

Thanks.

You can get a replacement key from Brownells, item #767-000-708 @US$5.56, but you should also consider replacing the j-lock safety with either a (conventional) Remington safety, item #767-251-150 @US$4.98 or a (large head) Scattergun Tech safety, item #800-100-002 @US$12.00 .

We can't hotlink. Cut and paste and fix the DOTS.

Remove the trigger plate assembly from the gun (2 pins through the reciever push out). Push out the small cross pin directly above the safety; being careful to catch the spring as it is released. Remove the spring and plunger. Now you can move the safety and rotate it to the unlocked position. Re-assemble.

You can replace the safety with a non-J lock type if you wish, replace the plunger also with the ball that goes with the non J lock system.

Did you have to replace the ball too as the poster after you stated? Is the Brownells PN 767-232-230 ? There is a spring too PN 767-175-140 that may be different as well.

ARWEN ACE would know. (I've never had a j-lock safety.)

Yes it can be unlocked without the key. You need something small to push the detent out of the way, then turn it with the screwdriver.
