Trying to reload 270 Win on a Dillon 550B with Redding dies. I am using Federal fusion Brass, once fired and well lubricated, in the full length resize/deprime station. The rims partially tear off on the upstroke .. is Federal Brass know to be weak ? Would appreciate comments from anyone with useful experience and an opinion to share.

Thanks

Fed brass is usually very soft compared to others, you should be able to load it once or twice before the primer pockets open up.
Personally if I get any that I can actually load, I shoot it once and throw it in the scrap brass bin.

Maybe try using a 270 bore brush on the inside of the cases. Extra crud inside the case can make a lot of extra friction. Just use a handle or a drill for a quick turn.

I'm a bit confused here... You say on the upstroke (case going up into the die) the rim partially tears off. I don't know how this is possible unless the case is sitting on top of the shell plate instead of in the shell plate. The shell plate should be pushing the head of the case.

I have seen plenty of cases where the rim has been partly torn off on the downstroke (coming back out of the die) because of insufficient lube on the case body and/or the inside of the neck (don't lube the case shoulder as this can sometimes cause shoulder collapse or deformation)

Obviously your shell plate needs to be the correct size for 270Win (Lee #2 for my press)

He's talking about the 'upstroke' of the handle.
And yes, sounds like a lube problem.
fiddler offers some great advice----lube the case mouth, inside.

Yes just to add I also lube the inside of the case mouth with the Dillon lube. I spray on a q-tip and wipe inside the case mouth for 10 or so cases then repeat. I also wet tumble my cases before sizing so they are shiny clean with no carbon residue. Then I wet tumble again without the stainless media with hot water, Dawn dishwashing soap and a smidge of Lemishine to remove the lube and am good to go from there. Might help in your case OP.

I think we need more info from OP...rims can't tear off on an upstroke. Something fundamental is seriously wrong here....

It's a lube issue. I had the same problem with spray on lube and .280 in my press. I lubed the inside of the die and put about 3x the amount of spray that I usually do and things came together.

Are you using neck lube? You likely need to lubricate the insides of the neck.Sounds like the expander ball is getting hung up.

Dry graphite is commonly used as it doesn’t effect powder.

Thanks very much for the comments gentlemen and the advice offered: The source of the problem was a mis-shaped expander ball on the deprimer stem which eventually separated into two fragments. The complete stem assembly is now being replaced by Redding under warranty.
