Anyone using a 1-6/8.5/etc scope on a rimfire?

I asked this in the optics forum but I think it’s better I ask it here.

I recently picked up a Bushnell SMRS 1-8.5. Has anyone used one (or a similar magnification) on a .22lr? I’m wondering if it can do double duty as a plinker and for some grouse hunting. I’m hoping that 1x with the dot illuminated will be really effective up close and the 8.5 will work well for picking off heads a little further out. However, I am worried about parallax.

Anyone care to share their thoughts?

I use a falcon s8i 1-8x on a 22lr. I shoot 10-300m with it. It does the trick if you are consistent with your cheek weld/head placement. Haven't actually taken it grouse hunting yet, but planning on using it this season

It should work fine once you get the parallax dialed in, I have a 3x9 on my marlin and shooting hares a 15-20ft is no problem at the x3 power setting. It has an adjustable objective though as it’s a rimfire specific model, 99% of the time it’s on x3 while hunting. Sometimes I dial it up to x5, shooting targets it’s always at x9.

At 1.5 pounds the SMRS is just too heavy for most rimfire rifles... to get from a true 1X to 8.5 in an FFP optic, you will have to sacrifice weight... to my thinking there really is no need for true 1X on a rimfire rifle, with the number of excellent AO scopes available in much lighter units, the SMRS would be a better choice on a funky black rifle.

Weight doesn’t really bother me to be honest. It’s either going to go on a T1X or maybe I’ll buy a DAR or TUF. Either one will be in a stock with an adjustable cheek piece. I’d rather a little more heft to have good glass and good ergos.

I don't have one on a 22, but I put a Vortex Viper 1-4 on my Ruger PC 9mm, my eyes won't do open sights anymore, or I would have stayed with the factory sights. I love it. I'm actually shopping around for a 1-? to put on one of my 10/22's.(looking for suggetions?) It seems to give me all the magnification I need for that rifle/cartridge combination out too a 100 yds and on 1x I have quick target acquisition. I wouldn't go that route if I wanted to shoot tiny groups at 100, but I have other 22's for that. But for a plinker, short range hunter, I think it will be great.

I've had a Leupold 1.5-5x20 on a Anschutz 1712 for a while. There will be some parallax error but the smaller objective lens should lessen the degree of this. I also mount it a little further forward so that it's easier to know if my eye isn't centred. I like the straight-tube scopes for the lighter weight and compact form factor. For higher magnification or larger size objective lens scopes I go for the AO or side focus parallax models. For off-hand and other less stable shooting positions, I don't have any complaints and don't feel like I'm giving up much to a higher-power or AO optic.

I do agree with a previous poster that with a scope like this, it almost never leaves the 5x power setting, and I have never used it at the lowest magnification.

Quality does not require weight... to my mind the SMRS is a poor choice, but if that is what you want then go for it. I have a TUF22 in a Boyd's At-One Thumbhole stock and mounted a Leupold Mark AR Mod 1 4-12X40mm AO, it focuses down to 10 yards, has excellent glass with Mil-Dot fine reticle and still weighs only 14.9 oz... there are quality scopes that come in under 12 oz and allow for parallax adjustment... I have VX-2 3-9X33mm EFR and VX-2 4-12X40mm AO scopes on other Rimfire rifles, and they work well too at a lower weight. I just think that there are better options for a rimfire rifle... just my opinion.

Completely fair. I went with the SMRS because I run Bushnells on all my rifles. I like the 10 mil turrets, the glass and the reticles.

Is the .22lr setup for a 50yds parallax? Will be interesting to see how well it works at 5-10 yards.

It's set at 50 yards and not adjustable so I am going to have to make sure of my alignment and cheek weld for the shorter shots. With a Magpul X22 stock I should be able to get the comb to a good height for a decent cheek weld.

For really close range I'm only interested in hitting a small dinner plate at speed consistently. The rodents are big around here...………...

I have a Leupold Vari X 1.5x5x20 on my .375 H&H carbine that I thought of using on the TUF but wanted the illuminated reticle.
