Hi all,

I have always wanted a tank, since I was a kid. Long story short, it was a date night for me and my wife and we were talking about what we wanted the most when we were kids. I said tank and to my surprise she responded "maybe you should start asking around and see how much one would cost, some times it's not as bad as we might think it is".

So here I am, asking all the knowledgeable CGN'ers to advise on how to start shopping or window-shopping for a working tank. By working, I mean derivable. My budget is $35,000 ~ $65,000. I'm located in Calgary so hopefully I can shop nearby.

Thanks in advance.

Contact Ryan Harriman at SFRC.

They are a sponsor at the top of the webpage.

He has quite a collection....don't recall a tank but he has quite a collection there including an armored personnel carrier as I recall. I am sure he has contacts.....and he is a nice guy also. ;)

I know nothing about that sort of thing personally.

You will need a controlled good licence, so brace yourself for government paperwork and delay.
The screening is pretty robust as well.

You may want to contact Mike Calnan at:

https://www.calnan.com/swords/

Mike was a PRes Arty officer who started the museum. I met Mike many, many years ago and he's a great guy and really loves what he does. It's a really tight community so he may know someone, or knows someone who knows someone who has a tank for sale.

The museum is near Ottawa.

I heard in Finland that BMP-2's go for about 75k. Some officers were discussing in casual conversation about whether it's better to buy a few multimillion $ IFV's or a big pile of old cannon fodder. The BMP actually rides nice; it has loads of suspension travel and is quite light in order to be amphibious.

Theres a military surplus guy in Westbourne Manitoba with some interesting stuff and he is getting old so maybe wants to reduce

The Military Museum on Crowchild might have some contacts too, they have a big yard with a couple tanks, and lots of APC

Further to what razorback said. Westbourne Army Surplus, may or may not want to, he can be crusty.

I would also pm Mr Wolverine he seems to be into military vehicles, and maybe stencollector I believe he is also into military hardware although I think it's more artillery.

Good luck.

Sweden did this in the 90’s, bought the reserve units BMP’S/MTLR’S for cheap as they realized training mechanized rooms with actual tracked APC’s was better then no vech.

If it’s prior to 1945 you can get away with no controlled
Goods, but the cheap tanks are post war Russian. So need controlled goods is needed. An APC which is a “tank” to most people is a good option. Depending on country of origin and what tech is has to be NOT a controlled good. Because contrilled is a huge hassle. Looked into controlled goods for a gun I bought and until I established it was exempt I was not interested in complying.
