...

My MDI set came with several issues, 3 of them I'd be able to fix myself but there are 2 that bother me so I'm sending it back.

1 - barrel won't fit the upper (I just tried freezing the barrel and heating the upper)
2 - BCG feels lose inside the upper, it rattles, I'm not sure how lose it can be without issue, but compared to my AR it is very loose. You can move it sideways with your fingers through the ejection port.

When I first saw the MS I thought of cancelling my MDI pre-order and ordering a MS, but MDI was promised to an earlier date. If I had vaguest idea of the issues and delays I'd have done it.

Are you returning yours for a refund or exchange? I still haven’t decided what I’m going to do with mine

My BCG seems to fit fine, comparable to my other ARs. Barrels are super tight though as well. Also my barrel nut threads on somewhat stiff the entire way, maybe the anodizing is to thick, I dunno.

I have some small marks in the magwell but nothing like the OP showed. Maybe ATRS will take it as a trade lol.

The whole idea of having a screw and heli coil as the retainer for the upper is a terrible design.
Prone to stripped heli coil, vibration loosing the screw, etc...
Also the upper can still move forward a small amount due to the size of the hole if it not completely tight or loosens off.

As opposed to the hook and pin on the ATRS which will not allow this to happen.

Helicoils are routinely used in black rifle offerings. Here is an A2 Receiver extension so it’s not uncommon.

I wonder if the magwell scalloping is done at the retailer after they receive the sets from MDI, and before they have them anodized....

Using a single bolt in a shear load with a helicoil ( or without one) is a recipe for disaster.
When you clamp 2 parts together, there needs to be clamping done at both ends to prevent movement ( rocking in this case ). Because the rear of the receiver isn't bolted down, it will move and the bolt at the front will loosen. This is a very simple concept that the designer didn't take into account.

Helicoils are very common practice with aluminum I am a welder fitter by trade and have built a lot of stuff for Rolls Royce (all military contracts) and 6061 when heat treated (properly) and using a helicoil (property installed) you can snap a bolt off in the helicoil.... so if MDI does their part correctly there should not be an issue.... just my 2 cents

I preordered one from MDI when it first, thankfully I ditched The SLR after they continued to lie with the two week delay BS. They did that for about 5 months. Like what the f was that all about?

ATRS receiver set I can’t say enough good things. Just a very good product, very nice looking, and the customer service is just amazing. There is absolutely no comparison between the two. Heck even MDI don’t communicate with their dealers never mind their customers.

ATRS doesn’t employ woman in tight yoga pants to do their machining. MDI for the win.

You obviously have never been to any of the events ATRS attends. They have a really cute lady who is also very knowledgeable on firearms working for them although not in tight yoga pants unfortunately.
Spandex is a privilege not a right and unfortunately is not observed much any more. Even those shown hosing down a mill.

Wearing yoga pants in public, or leggings is gross and trashy.

I have a Maccabee it’s in the low 600’s. It’s flawless. Magwell, gas tube hole everything. Had it out at the range today and fired 200 rounds screw did not come loose. I just installed a washer on it now. They were 10 for $1 if anyone is having theirs come loose. Scooped this up even though I have a modern sporter coming in August and have zero regrets.

It's good to hear some positive stories too.
At the end of the day, if it makes you happy and it works then that's great.
There is usually more news about something when it is negative, rare to hear the positive.

Obviously somewhere along the lines of the low 600s and ___ the tooling started to die.

Can confirm at least 3/4 of the way through the 6’s it had hit that point.

How often should the tooling be changed out? Is MDI trying to push the absolute thresholds to make their $ go further with each set?

Shipping isn’t cheap either, and for a retailer to have to eat return, and resending it back to correct issues kind of sucks.
I feel for the retailer, but at the same time want my product to be functional at least.

oww man that disappointing..
i dont know what i,m disappointed in more the machining marks or the lack of QC, how is it possible to go from the mill to, the vibe, then to bead blasting, to final inspection, then to anodizing, back to the shop, QC inspection, then to packing and finally to shipping and NO ONE saw this?
As rick say, stevie wonder QC .
I think even he would have found this...
you know there was a time when, Manufacturing, in Canada was one of the things we were well known for.

Yeah man I heard a bunch of negatives to begin with. Having 3k worth of new parts sitting there was the deciding factor for me. I wasn’t waiting for my sporter. Ordered through CSC and they were great. if anyone’s on the fence about barrels take a look at the Bsf fluted carbon fibre barrel for either rifle. I was getting some groups with cheap federal bulk .223 that I didn’t think was possible, and i was playing with it not taking my time (just over 1/2 inch at 50) not a doubt it my mind it will shoot Sub MOA with something better. I’ll do a range report when I have more time. It’s going out for gophers tomorrow
