If you're hunting wide open spaces, the .338 is a little flatter shooting. Bullets have a little higher sectional density, weight for weight. The 9.3 is useable out to 300 yards, which is about as far as I'm likely to shoot. Two extra rounds in the magazine, burns less powder, less recoil. Lots of bullets and brass available.

These are a few of my favourite things.

Add in that you can make brass out of 30-06 range pickups which is nice too. Not sure important given the amount of high quality brass out there, but it is nice if you want to make a bunch of W-W 30-06 brass into high quality Wagner brass without spending the money on Nosler or Lapua brass.

The .338 is a better all around cartridge if you need to consider game from "sea to shining sea..." but since I have many rifles, I have purged myself of all .338" bore cartridges and make the jump from .30 cal to .358/.366/.375... I currently have two 9.3's and they are a very good choice for most applications... definitely not what I would bring in the mountains for goats or sheep, but everywhere else and for everything else on the continent it gives up little to other options... particularly if you reload, as you can down load it to soft recoiling deer levels and upload it with heavy pills to take care of bears and moose. Brass and bullets are widely available and not expensive... out to 300 yards you can't blame the cartridge.

not my favourite bullets but the 250 grains bullet accubond will work on sheep and goat. i know at least one person in the Yukon and one in AK doing it ...

I’m having a nice old dark bored half octagon Mauser sporting rifle barrel rebored, as I picked up two more Mausers and needed more projects. If the rebore works out will be a .375-06 Improved with a shorter neck, we were trying to go 9.5x57 to give that another shake but not able to set back that far. Plan is now to run the 9.5x57 reamer deeper to .30-06 case length. So despite my .338 Win advocation I’m curious about these non-magnum medium bores... let’s see if I change my own stubborn beliefs.

I'll take the pictures.

Ardent: Have a 375-06 S H built on an M17 Enfield action. Shoots 270 speers at 2550 with 62 grains of reloader 15. It is accurate but kicks pretty good at the bench. Should be a fun build as I enjoy watching your posts especially the wood work, please post your progress.

Good stuff, we’ll see going to load 235s to keep the speed up and regulate the sights for the fastest safe H4895 load. I like the simplicity of loading everything with H4895, and the same bullet diameter as my H&Hs and Flanged Mag. Simplifies my bench, if I like it enough I may even cut out 7mm and load only .375s but now we’re getting to crazy talk. Gun will be very light for a .375-06, 6lbs or so, barrel is thin to the bare minimum.

Call me paranoid but what happens when you go on a long hunting trip. You're a very long way from your reloading bench and something happens and you don't have any of your custom loads. There's one shop that has a limited selection of ammo. Being able to get some kind of commercially available ammo is better than missing out on a hunt.

About 2-3 years ago my buddies and I went moose hunting somehow a bag was left at home. Benny didn't have any of his ammo. Luckily Jack shoots the same caliber so he was still able to enjoy his hunt. If he was shooting some rare ammo he was screwed.

Dumb things happen and ammo availability is very important. I say go with the 338

Why people keep popping up the question that you are asking?
If I have forgotten the ammo and there's a gun store nearby, I will simply buy a new gun and scope combo from that store and continue hunting.
Using a "queer" cartridge will not impact one's hunting at all

What? If the OP was asking for help selecting a caliber. I just put forth a scenario that actually happened illustrating how "QUEER" cartridges are not your best choice in remote areas where you don't have access to every possible type of ammo.
