Mini-14 vs AR15: Which is Better? A Paul Harrell Vid

The AR is already better just on its technical merits, but if the AR was NR it would be a superior choice.

I enjoy both .....different type of shooting.....different drills

My Mini is now a scout configured rifle

The only thing I hate about the Mini is being stuck with overly expensive 5 rounds magazines

I think the Mini-14 was competitive in the '70s to the '90s, when the AR15 wasn't what it later became.

I think the mini 14 is still competitive in restricted states .... or in our cases, restricted provinces ... but only because of our laws.

Back when the AR was non-restricted, I still preferred the Mini as a general hunting/plinking rifle. Nowadays, with the AR's R-rating, the Mini has even more of an advantage.

If the AR were to be re-classified to NR today (yeah...right...) I might get one, but it would be a novelty toy. For the type of shooting I am interested in, a flush-mounted 5-round magazine is superior to a 10-round box sticking out the bottom of my rifle. Don't even get me going on 20-round monsters pinned to 5 rounds; the worst of both worlds.

Same thing with the pistol grip. It's superior for certain specific things I like to do; basically, any hunting that may have me on the rifle, in shooting position, waiting motionless for extended periods for the shot opportunity. To me, that means turkeys or coyotes. For the bulk of "normal" hunting or shooting, a pistol grip is just an awkward encumbrance that does little to improve shooting, while doing plenty to detract from handling and carrying comfort.

As to choosing which is better based upon which one sells better: you've gotta be kidding. George Carlin had it right when he spoke about the average intelligence of people. Why would you trust that?

This is exactly what I was thinking. The modularity and options for every part of the AR15 is unrivaled.

And now that the Maccabee SLR & ATRS Modern Sporter are available for 5.56 & the BCL102 & Stag 10 for .308. You can have your NR ARish style firearms.

Quit using logic in a popularity contest! ;D

The mini I had was the worst firearm I have owned.... and that includes Norinco.
In my experience the fit, finish, ergonomics and accuracy of a $600 Norc AR was superior to the $1200 Ruger.
Ruger makes some good products, but I have never been so disappointed in a firearm since that Mini 14.
Mind you that is from a personal sample size of 1, although I did play with and look at a few others that we're no different.
