Best prices on LPK and Buffer/stock assemblies?

I am about to start building my first AR. Bought the lower back before C71 dropped just in case, now I'm wanting to do something with it.

What should I start with first, an LPK or a buffer/stock kit?

Whos got the best prices for LPKs and buffer/stock kits?

What tools do I need for installing either of these parts?

I like the folks at True North Arms, and they have some good prices.

I started with a LPK, then the buffer/stock kit.

You'll need punches, allen keys (grip installation), and safety glasses (ask me how I know). I didn't have any other specialty tools for assembling the lower, and I did not end up with scratches on everything.

For the upper you will need some specialty tools. I have yet to build an upper, so I cannot suggest what to get first.

I haven't gotten an upper yet. I figure I'll get the lower done with first, then I'll get working on an Upper. This way, if I find myself super eager to get the thing running I can just buy a complete upper (I want to build the whole thing, but sometimes my patience runs out lol)

I was leaning towards ordering from TNA, I've bought other stuff from them before without issue, but figured it wouldn't hurt to ask here if someone else has even better prices for either of the components I need... TNA has a really cheap butt stock kit but its never in stock...
 
Go to reliable. Buy the LPK without a grip (a2 grips SUCK) for $46 and add a grip you like. They also have buffer tube/kits for $68. Add a stock of your liking.

All you need to install is punches, and a castle nut wrench ($20 at reliable) and a hex bit/driver for the grip, though a AR bench block for the pins can be a big help. If you lack them you can always ask if reliable can install it.

Tiger Arms has similar prices but no grip-less LPK (I *really* hate a2 grips), and will install it all for a low fee if you bring your lower. Saves money if you don't have punches, castle wrench etc... Both within ~20 min drive of PoMo.

A good armorers wrench is a good investment. I just built an AR in 6.5 Grendel, and with parts I've been collecting I built a second in 5.56 as it was the rifle I built's upper barrel. I did a youtube vid on it. A bit of time, patience a few hand tools is all it took.
 
If I might suggest something if you are building from scratch. Install a VLTOR A5 buffer system.

Long and Short of it is that it's a proprietary rifle length buffer, buffer tube, and spring. It's meant to be rifle length in action allowing for a longer recoil impulse to make firing feel smoother, while still allowing you to use collapsible stocks.

I think it's a pretty neat idea and installed it on my AR.


BCM makes and sells a whole kit standard for them is the A5H0 weight

VLTOR the inventor sells their own kit too which comes with the A5H2 weight.

The only reason to shop in Canada is for must need items you absolutely can't wait for or an item that requires an export permit.
Lots of Canadian venders source some of their parts directly through Brownell's. Hell, some of them don't even bother to remove the Brownell's sku stickers...
 
If you are planning on upgrading your trigger anyway, Brownells has an LPK (no fire control group, no grip) on sale right now for $25USD...And they have buffer tube kits (tube, buffer, spring, castle nut and end plate) for $40USD. Even with the crappy exchange and shipping that’s an awesome price.

If you are ok with the standard milspec trigger then the no grip Reliable LPK for $46 (no shipping to worry about) is probably the best price you’ll find.

That Brownells buffer kit though will be tough for any Canadian retailer to beat...even with exchange and shipping. Like Beltfed said above, many Cdn retailers are just repackaging Brownells parts anyway.

This. Aero is an OEM manufacturer for many american companies, too. Top quality stuff. Maybe I got lucky but the Aero LPK I got has the best-smoothest milspec trigger I have ever felt.

TNA kits and parts are inexpensive because they're chinese, so.......
