Hey folks,

I am really liking this rifle, so I thought I would do a mini review.

I recently nabbed a CZ 527 Synthetic in 7.62x39mm and thought it would be a fun plinker/bush gun/economical medium range precision rifle.

My first impressions of the rifle were:

Man this thing is light and compact!
Bolt throw is super short! And smooth!
It looks cool!
Stock iron sights, yes please!
The stock touches the barrel in the forend... I checked every rifle the store had and they all were touching in the same fashion.
WTF proprietary bases?? - It takes 16mm proprietary bases...

After sighting in the irons (which are composed of a fiber optic elevation adjustable front, and windage adjustable rear), and shooting out to 500m on a man sized steel target, my gun ADHD led me to find a EGW picatinny mount and an optic. I decided on the vortex spitfire fixed 3x prism sight as it is light and compact, with a wide FOV and 3x is plenty to get the job done within 500m.

Disclaimer: I have only shot chinese surplus corrosive ammo through her so far (yes I clean it properly after every outing), and thus have likely not even remotely tapped any accuracy potential, but the point of this rifle is to be economical for me so I will only be buying expensive ammo for hunting purposes.

After I managed to get the sight and rail, I had to contact vortex to get me some mount screws so that I could remove the spacer on the optic because it makes it sit rather high (think "beard weld" on the stock as opposed to "chin weld" lol).

I sighted in the rifle at a guesstimated 100-150m distance on a deactivated logging road in the boonies (lets say 125m). All shots were taken prone off of a jerry-rigged platform composed of an old pallet and my backpack, super high tech right? My initial sight in group surprised me, it was a 1.5" 3 shot group. After that I just wanted to shoot so I spat out some 5rd groups all were greater than 3" but I wasn't particularly anal about them. I suspect I can do much better if I feel like it next time. Either way I got it sighted in and it showed me some accuracy potential. I'll update as I shoot it more. Some unassuming old beer cans I found next to the road were filled with water and subsequently destroyed ( and taken for recycling afterwards), and I managed to break the bolt on my steel gong haha.

During the week I had off ( which was a small break from the seemingly relentless hell of my life currently) I carried the rifle with me when I took my dog on hikes up the logging roads and cuts. It is very light (6lbs sans optic and ammo), and felt like a feather on my shoulder the entire time. The shorter barrel meant less getting caught on tree branches when walking through the bush with it slung, and it handles nicely on the draw from slung position.

Overall I am really enjoying this rifle. There is just something about a bolt action that is so practical and so fun to shoot. I personally dig the look of the rifle with the prism sight, and it is very functional to boot. With the combination of EE surplus ammo it is a cheap fun rifle that can fill many roles for me, and I cannot see myself soon parting with it (even though I usually go through guns faster than the libs spend your tax dollars).

I have a few videos outlining the rifle here for those interested:https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC_fdFJJlPJ9rzHbfyCV6LsA?view_as=subscriber

Oh yea, here are some photos:

I really like my wood stocked one too. I went with a conventional scope in Warne QD rings to easily use the irons in case the scope fails or gets damaged.

It's fun rifle to shoot with low recoil and plenty of punch for midsized game, and cheap to shoot for targets/plinking.

Good review man,

I’ve been ogling these rifles for a while now & everybody has great things to say.

Thanks for posting

Ryan

Yea, a good route to go. The EGW base completely occludes the irons.

I love these little gems, mine was far off out of box with barnaul ammo, and no tool to adjust the sights. I think I'll end up putting a rail and small red dot, too bad it's proprietary mounts.

I already had a CZ 527 with walnut stock that I carried for the last 2 years deer hunts. I like that rifle so much that I wanted another one the same without a scope to carry for dense bush drives etc... I bought the synthetic version because I felt I would feel the need to be less careful with it in the field. While the walnut rifle is a quality piece that could likely take a lot of abuse, its a really nice looking piece. The fibre optic sights make the synthetic stock the preferred version for using irons to the walnut as well. So this year both rifles will be going with me for deer. I have even considered the synthetic version in 308 but sadly the 308 synthetic I want (the basic rifle with fixed magazine) is not sold by CZ USA but only in Europe so I don't know where to get it without a more costly custom order making it not really worth it since I already have a Ranger.... I thought the ranger would eclipse a K98 mauser that I have carried for Moose but nothing else I own is as accurate as that Mauser so its a tough replacement. Don't get my wrong the CZ ranger is a nice rifle but its not as classic as the smaller sibling 527.

my only issue with the synthetic CZ 527, just like your rifle my stock is slight warped at the end and like all CZ's the rifle seems to be taking a bunch of rounds to become more accurate. Every other CZ rifle I owned shot ok until I put approximately 200 rounds through it then they because quite accurate and the actions smooth. Even the CZ shadow was like this, I thought what's the big deal but now its ridiculous. I think I own 7 or 8 CZ products now, I can't really think of another manufacturer that sells rifles I like more that suit my needs of having iron sights and the old school quality finish and feel.

Bought one for my wife.....ok stop laughing. I have many rifles, but now live on a island with Blacktail that go 65lbs on the hooks. Have all the components, even a mold to shoot cast( seemed like a good idea, try finding a .310 sizing die in either Lyman or Lee).

Put a baush and lomb 1.5-6 variable on it. Old eyes, but really here a bayonet might be more applicable. The scope is nice and low profile, i would shoot it on these bambi deer to 200, and interior Mulies to 100. Nice light choice for her, and realistically i will always be right there with one of the 25 other rifles more powerful.

I have a CZ 527 with wood stock and skinner peep sights, I think I am in love with it. It has the older front sight and with its very fine blade shoots at 100 yards are done with ease. After getting the peep sight put on it we were messing around shooting 10x10 steel plates at 200 yards which was fun.

Good accuracy with brass hunting and target ammo and handloads, and acceptable accuracy with non corrosive norinco.

Open over the counter seasons and habitats here coincide for moose, elk and deer though so I never actually seem to bring it hunting. I may go deer hunting on VI this year so we will see if it comes along.
