My Ruger 22/45 just came in the mail today from P&D - very fast service, and a good price. I was very happy as it's my first handgun :D

I decided to strip it according to the manual to figure out how it works and clean off all the excess oil covering it. Stripping went fine, but I hit a BIG snag on reassembly. You need to push the bolt stop through the frame, bolt and receiver before angling the mainspring into the grip. I guess I didn't have the pin lined up properly, and when I pushed it moved forward and got lodged in the forward portion of the frame. I can't pull it out. It will wiggle, move about, but will not pull out at all. I have no idea what it is caught on. I can't pull the bolt out as it's hanging up on the pin. I've tried putting the bolt, safety, trigger etc. in all different positions but no luck.

I haven't had it for more than 3 hours :( :( :(

There is a pin that holds the bolt stop onto the mainspring assembly but I cannot pull the whole thing out far enough to punch this pin out. I need help!

Here are some pictures to help out my bad description...

Call me at the store (P & D , 1-780-420-6419) on Saturday afternoon, Ask for Scott, I'll talk you through it.
I don't start this Saturday untill noon, 2 pm your time so don't call before 3pm. Talk to me and I'll help you. These little pistols can be a ##### to get back together right but there is a couple of tricks that are not listed in the manual. Untill Saturday put it down and quick screwing with it you will only make it worse...trust me!!

Scott

Ah, I remember well the first time I took my Mk1 apart. I invented several four letter words as I recall. Once you figure out how to reassemble it, you usually don't forget!

You will eventually forgive your pistol for having pissed you off so much and will come to cherish it dearly. :D

I feel your pain! LOL

:D:D:D

Don't feel stupid, I got the same gun. It's a #####, part of the reason I hate the Ruger .22 pistols, way too much fiddeling to get it together. Will be getting a Browning Buck Mark someday to fix that.

Do as m39a2 says or else you'll burst a blood vessel in you head and fire the thing across the room.

Same thing happened to me last night .... forgot a step and it got stuck . Took me a lot of energy to get the pin/bolt out . I just kept trying and it got out . No perticualr procedure ... just wigle it . The step u forgot is to put a magazine in , pull the trigger and using a Q tip or a pen ,push the hammer up so that ur pin/bolt can go thru all the way. Dont forget to get the mag out once the hammer is up . Once u understand the mechanism its a piece of cake . Best thing is to have someone show u how the 1st time . Good luck !!!

if u wanna drive the 2h to montreal i can show u with mine :)

Sounds like you've got a good ally in Scott. If you can hang tough all will be okay. In a few months you'll look back at this and smile. I've had MkII's in one form or another for a long time and I still swear at them on occassion when I'm putting them back together but I've never sworn at them when I was shooting them.

Thanks guys, and thanks so much Scott! My experience with P&D has been wonderful, and your offer of help tops it off! You can be sure more of my hard earned money will be going your way :D

A more mechanically inclined friend came over whom I just introduced to clay pigeon shooting last week. He figured out that the little bar that rests on the mainspring was preventing the arm from articulating enough to pull the bolt stop pin out. Pushed it to the side, wiggled and pulled and the whole thing slid free!

Someone should write up a list of Ruger tricks for people like me :D

Oops........I'm the idiot here. The site has closed down.......

Some good tips at rimfirecentral...look under Ruger-other

Yep. I had the same thing. Just gave it a good pull and it came back out. Make sure you've pushed the hammer forward before you try and put the bolt stop back in. That seems to be the one I miss from time to time. The first time I put mine back together it took half an hour. The second time was 15 minutes. I can stick one back together now in about 2 minutes or less. You'll love the gun eventually. More fun than a barrel of monkeys :)

Rugers are easy to put back together. First you wait until Venus and Mars are in alignment and then you start by standing on one leg facing north holding the Ruger in your left hand. And yes it does have to be your left hand. Then rotate four degrees to your right without letting your other foot touch the ground. If it does touch the ground you will need to start all over. Of course Venus and Mars only align once a month so it will be a long wait.:bangHead: Then once you have rotated four degrees, you can then firmly place the pin into its hole and push. Then you have to begin the chant. You start slowly building up to a cressendo. I can't remember the words but if you do a search on Ruger hopelessness I am sure you will find them. Once the pin is in place you slowly lower your other foot to the ground proclaiming loudly, I've F##kin had it. Then once you have done this, you call your friend who also has one and they can tell you the real way to put it back together.:dancingbanana:

I fought with mine for over 2 hours the first time I took it apart. After I figured it out I have not had any problems since. I figure it is such an awesome gun to shoot it is worth learning the secret of the Ruger.

And that right there is one of the reasons I'm not getting a Ruger .22.

Great little pistols, don't get me wrong...

Hello,

Just received our 22/45, great little gun. I dont really like the sights specially the front one but otherwise it is ok.

It would be nice and helpfull if someone could make a disassembly guide with photos. The User manual is very vague.

geo/tenx, nice references there, very obscure don't let your 3 year old watch that movie as the next day he will call all the little girls at the park witches....

Michael Rennie was ill The Day the Earth Stood Still....

On a a serious note, I find a cheap set of dental picks from Princess Auto are useful in putting my Ruger back together. Also as you re-insert the bolt stop keep the barell pointed upward at a 45 dgree angle to help everything drop into place.

ontgunner, next time I'll break it I'll send it to ya :p

tenexx, those dental picks are great aren't they? Didn't help in this situation unfortunately. I love Princess Auto!

I'm glad i'm not the only one who had a problem putting these together, makes me feel better :D
