Scoping a Marlin 1895

I'm awaiting delivery of a Marlin 1895 and want to mount a low power scope on it (2-7 or 1.5-5). The only bases I've seen readily available are the Leupold QR. Anybody have any experience with these holding zero on something that recoils a bit ? Other options ?

Ideally, I'd like to mount a receiver sight, possibly an XS, as a backup. Brian Pearce configured this rifle and detailed it in a back issue of Rifle. He ended up using a Williams, and scribed a line on the side-mounted part so he could put the top part back on and index it to the line. From the pics, it looks like he either had to remove the QR base, or mount the top half of the Williams peep overtop of the base once the scope was removed. If the latter option even works, I would think you'd need a pretty high front sight to keep things aligned.

Suggestions ?

Marlin 1895

The new model 1895's are no longer drilled and tapped on the side for a receiver sight. You'd have to use a Williams WGRS top mount receiver sight which uses the rear scope base holes, which kinda leaves out mounting a scope as primary.

I have and still use a conventional Leupold fixed base and fixed rings on both my 1895SS and 1895G, one with a VX III in 1.5-5, and a Euro 30 in 2-7 X 33mm.

I had another that a Warne setup with their two piece steel Maxima bases and their vertical split rings in low. This setup with their quick release rings might be the hot setup for what you are looking for.

I am sure you can get it tapped for an older style reciever sight. Not owning ont of those guys though I do not know what the clearance would be like with respect to the scope bases. Around Ottawa I would just go with a reciever sight, unless your eyes are older and you have trouble using them like my dad.
 
Actually the rifle is a NIB 1979 model, so it probably is drilled for the receiver mount. I've been doing a bit more digging and it looks like Talley has a peep sight that mounts into one of their QR bases. Also, Brockman apparently makes a Talley clone that has the peep integrated into the rear base. Thanks for the feedback so far.
 
RHS- be careful what you wish for, a customer of mine put a new Leupold 2 3/4 power scope on a new 1895 and a few heavy handloads and the scope was done for, no more crosshairs!!! My suggestion.....get a good peep that fits, and learn to love it!!

Poetic justice for daring to put a scope on a lever action. :p
 
Primarily to 'assist' the aging eyesight:rolleyes:, especially as far as load testing is concerned, I've mounted scopes on both my Marlin's. On my 444S I have a Bushnell Scopechief VI, 1.5x4.5, using a set of Weaver pivot mounts, and on my 1895GS, a Leupold 1x4, Vari-XII, again, with Weaver pivot mounts for quick access to the iron sights should the need arise. So far, no problem. Both these combinations have worked out well.
