Superbee pointed this rifle out to me on Salter's site. It's a beauty but the price is beyond stratospheric. Interesing point is the Cmk4 stamping on the bbl knox. Anyone ever seen that before? This one fits the profile as a civilian model but...

He has it listed as Lee Enfield E.A.R. in the list of Modern Longguns.

The amount of misinformation in the description is remarkable. EAL rifles were not made by Long Branch in the '50s, of course, they were commercially assembled by EAL using surplus parts acquired from CAL. That particular rifle is a very nice example of what is generally thought to be the version of the rifle intended for civilian sale. This is the first I have EVER heard about issue EALs being detroyed en masse by the Gov't. I do know for a fact that they were in inventory AFTER the supply of No.4s was exhausted; they were issued to the Rangers.
Would the CMk.4 not refer to the pattern of barrel, having been placed there before the barrel was sold to EAL?
The price is what - well over $2000 high, even allowing for condition?

I found the Cmk4 thing intriguing...I wonder if that was the govt's designation for it when they issued one? Thus I wonder if anyone else has ever seen one with that stamped on it?
Yeah, the price is ridiculous. Wonder if he'll get it?

He's quite the spinner of yarns, isn't he??

CNo.4 Mk.1*, etc. was a rifle designation post-war. I suspect that Mk.4 referred to the 4th pattern of barrel.

In a conversation with the LCMM of the EALs back around 2000, he indicated that the remaining stocks were soon to be withdrawn, as the CF was buying a new survival rifle. The remaining rifles would likely have been smelted. I recall the number still in depots at the time to be around 3 or 4 hundred.

Eal

That dealers a shameless joke! I've had a few EAL's and have seen them with '46 stamped on chamber area which indicates to me even used barrels etc might have been throw into the mix.

The owner of the Long Branch lightweight rifle sent me these two pics of the rear sight. No sign of a Long Branch non standard marking...looks like a normal LB Mk I rear sight with a sniper slider...

? Wrong thread? The sight looks like a LB Mk.I that has had its fixed aperture removed.
Ahh - no butt socket - the lightweight rifle thread. Why would the fixed aperture be removed from a sight when a scope was not mounted?

You're absolutely right, I put it in the wrong thread. I'd delete it but now you've responded to it here...what should I do?
I have reposted it in the right thread.
Maybe they felt they were saving weight by deleting the aperture? Since that was the whole idea of the rifle, to pare a bunch of weight off the design...and it was an experimental design that was never fully developed.

Seems silly and certainly the wrong place to save it. Might mean the difference between getting off an accurate snap shot at the enemy and getting shot while you raise the sight up...
it made sense on the sniper rifle only because the aperture hit the scope.

I have a 1943 Long Branch No.4Mk1* that was FTR'd in Fahzerky in 1951. It has the trigger pivot moved to action and beech furniture fitted at that time, has a 5 groove barrel and was plugged full of cosmoline when I bought it. HOWEVER, it also had the battle sight removed. I never could figure out why, as there is no indication a scope was ever mounted. Anybody got an idea?

In cilvilian life, some guys ground it off cause it tended to get caught in stuff and possibly damage the sight assy. There is no rhyme or reason as to why bubba would do such a thing...I have a #4mk1 which has about 3/4" removed from the end of the barrel (still has the bayonet lug). I asked the seller why it was cut there, and he said " so it would fit into the cupboard".

Presumably cut at about a 20 degree angle with a hacksaw, with a nice big bur?:puke:

well lets see if someone starts a new thread about the ultra rare enfield rifle they just bought :D

I just got an email back from Salters- it did sell at that price!!!:eek::runaway::popCorn:

And, now they want to buy mine!
Like I'm going to see any of my LB's sent out of the country...not likely. It's not for sale anyway. My EAL is on my never sell list.
