Where are all the Savage model 99’s

Has anyone notice a decline on Savage 99’s hitting the EE and in stores in general. I recall seeing a lot more of them everywhere. I have had WTB for a couple of months for one a 22hp and have had no success. I have people say they have them the suddenly not want to sell them... just curious if people think the market is drying up on them.

The 99 has been out of manufacture since 1997, so if the apparent supply seems to be diminishing its not really a surprise. Keep your eyes open and one will come up, but by then it might be more expensive than you're willing to spend, or is in poor condition; tang cracks are common due to improper bedding at the factory. I had a similar experience with a M-58 S&W .41 magnum. I had kept my eyes open for one for a generation or more, then 2 appear on the EE, and both were 3X more than I was willing to pay for what is essentially an overgrown 4" M-10 M&P .38.

I think the decline started about 4 years ago, around the time I noticed the prices going up. I picked one up in .300 Savage for $560.00 and was glad I did. Within a few months of that purchase, prices in used gun stores started to climb, and there seemed to be fewer of them.

There is a market (more U.S. based than here) for NICE models 1899 and 99. I am talking about pre million ser#'s and excellent condition. These rifles and carbines in .250 Savage add a premium. Post million guns draw value from limited run calibres such as .358 Win. .284 Win etc. As with all guns owners of common post million 99E's in .308 Win feel they are worth 700.00 bucks. They are not. The 99C has followers due to the detachable magazine but they are no where near the handling and quality of the older rotary guns. All in there are always beat up early .303 Savages (great calibre that deserves to be reloaded and hunted) and the very common 99EG in .300 Savage around. Due some research, pick the one you want and wait for it to surface. Oh ya forgot have about 800.00 in your pocket to cover it.

I don’t mind paying a premium in amazing shape !! I would love to find a couple of H’s but they seem like hens teeth.

Some folks that have them have no reason or need to sell them. Some folks may view, say, the old 1899's in Winchester calibers as heirloom material to be passed down. Maybe they have one of each Savage caliber and want to keep the set together...or a couple of H's that are just so handy they are hard to part with...
Anybody have an old square thread 30-30 barrel laying around..? :)

They are still around but don’t seem to last. I saw two 22hp online at a gun store in Guelph recently. Not sure if one is still there. I was lucky that an 1899 in 22hp with a .410 barrel showed up at a local gun store. More then I wanted to pay but I didn’t think that would happen again. I have been surprised at some of the reasonable prices of 99’s on EE and have two more because of it.
Patience is the name of the game because in general the prices are all over the place and definitely know what you are looking at. At a gun show I was ready to buy a 1899 250-3000 with checkered trigger until I turned it over and found all sorts of modifications.
I’ve only been collecting for a couple of years so not sure if now is better or worse for selection.

I went and saw the 2 at shooters choice , unfortunately the one had a very significant crack and for 650 not really worth it .. I have received some PMs on my WTB adds so I hope they pan out.. in the GTA I have not seen many at the show’s

A friend who is experienced with gun shows mention the further north I went ie. Renfrew and Eganville the more 99’s I would see. The closer to Ottawa the more high power bolt action. Different sort of hunters I guess. This year I will test his theory.

i will try your theory at your southern show this july. i had to put a sign on mine every year not for sale otherwise my take down 300savage will be gone for good ...

Ps: mine is coming from ontario, used in quebec and maybe soon in yukon ...

Most of the very good ones are getting to be few and far between. Most have been used hard and put away wet. Like a .300 T/D I know of with the 410 barrel that is below a gray rat example with the rear sight dovetail welded over because the owner couldn't probably find a slot blank! Also the wood has zero chance of a restoration and not a trace of bluing amongst the pits and still looking to get well over 1k.

And every once in a while being in the right place at the right time makes the hunt worthwhile. I've picked these two up in the last month or so.

A 1899 .300 T/D ser# 2421xx made in 1922 and survived NOT being drilled & tapped. Until I got it home and disassembled it I was sure that the wood was replaced-just too good to be almost a 100 yrs old.All parts same number stamped.

The EG is in .308W ser# 9590xx says made in 1958 but the boss code IIK I read as 57', another stunning example of a 60+ year survivor.
