Rimfire PRS Trainer Build. Savage MkII with Custom Bottom Metal! PIC HEAVY

Hi everyone, I just finished my .22 Trainer Build. Honestly they are such a great tool to practice shooting hour after hour at a mere fraction of the cost!

The rifle is a Savage MKII TRR-SR, with the factory boyds stock. I did a little custom paint job on the stock and sanded the barrel channel some more to make sure it was free floated under pressure.

It has a EGW 20 MOA base, with a SPUHR 4002 Mount, and a Kahles k312ii.

The issue everyone has is those flimsy Bottom Metals! I laser cut a 1/8th piece of stainless steel and paired it with a a Stainless Steel #6 1/2inch Robertson pan head screw to replace the existing screw. I can now torque the action screw without any issues. I have attached a picture with the old bottom metal on top of the new one to show the difference.

If anyone is interested in these please let me know, I might considering making some for others. They would be for the newer MkII / BTVSS and I believe they would only fit the wood stock (they would probably fit other stocks with some minor sanding, unless the older MkII's had different screw placement, as I used my OEM bottom metal for the measurements PM me if interested!!!.

Looks like a labor of love! Congrats on the new build, look forward to hearing how it shoots! I know next to nothing about that brand of scopes though...time for some research. :)

It shoots fantastic. I have shot Eley and Sk match ammo through it and it basically punches a ragged hole at 50m.

I shoot a lot of CCI standard velocity because it’s so much cheaper!

I can get consistent impacts from 50m out to 300m as long as I read the wind properly.

To reach 300m it’s 17.5mils!

It’s a blast!
 
Your rifle appears to be a Vudoo v22. If so have you had extraction issues with it and is your chamber coned? Do you know which barrel is on ur rifle ? There is a letter on the bottom of barrel just in front of the recoil lug and it will be either A or B. A denotes an Ace barrel and B is for the Bartlein. Beautiful setup and awesome optics. Sorry for all the questions but I have a Vudoo and experienced a bunch of failures and trying to narrow it down. I know they will fix it but rather not send it back across the pond for who knows how long? Thanks and sorry to bother you. Cheers Chris

That’s a 500$ savage i bought the 300$ version and it wears a pmII at the moment very impressed with the little savage probably not quite as nice as a vudoo but has been very reliable and gophers to 200yd
 
I almost bought a used mdt chassis but i decided not start down that road and enjoy it for what it is and ordered a cz457 mtr i forgot how fun .22 can be.

Yeah they truly are great. I am not a fan of the MDT chassis, as it gives the rifle a even smaller profile, making it harder to rest on barricades...etc. If mdt made a fore end for that chassis that was 18-20 inches I would be game for sure.

I picked up an LSS-22 for my 18” 1712 just so I can use the rifle with a proper scope in the rimfire matches (adjustable cheek riser is critical otherwise I can’t get behind the scope). I put their Arca rail on it to help widen the forend part, which worked very well for what it is. Still tho, like you mentioned, it’s too short and is overall IMO not the best design. The forend section really needs to be several inches longer.

There are some other options but only seem to be available to USA residents. We need more of a KRG style for the mk2 in Canada. That being said the Boyd’s seem to be doing okay.

I’m picky with stocks. And I really don’t like the chassis that everyone is using, but I appreciate the benefits. My fav setup is the Manners with mini chassis as it retains that chassis “A5” type look but has the aluminum chassis inside. Nice for swapping between rifles.
I’ve got a GRS Sporter in Nordic Wolf coming from Germany for my 1727F that should be here in a month or two. If it’s awesome I’ll get the same one for this 1712.

Yes it’s not bad. I wish they inlet the Bifrost for the 1712 and 1727 but they don’t. I prefer the synthetic over laminate but that’s not a deal breaker here as it’s really one of my only options to get out of the factory wood stocks.
