2019 Schedule Page 2: Version 4.3

To all AFRA Match Participants

Winter is “kinda” over and we are getting ready for the first match of the season on the May 4 and 5 weekend.

If you recall, at the AGM a decision was made to run paper targets manually until we could be certain that the modifications to electronics proved reliable enough to count on for a full match weekend. Over the winter, the executive spent a lot of time and money building new target frames for the electronics, had the Shot Marker system upgraded. They have proved reliable at 300m on 7 frames and now need a stress test by all calibers at all distances.

For this reason, the executive has made a decision to change the format for Saturday. Saturday will be not be a competition but a full day of testing your loads, confirming come ups, and practice to prove the electronics. There will be no charge to members on Saturday, however if any non-members do show up, we will have to charge them the visitors pass for insurance reasons. During Saturday Mike S will also be there for memberships and shoot cards to be sold. Remember the first match weekend is the deadline to buy a shoot card. After that, you will have to pay by the weekend. We will attempt to get each relay 30 minutes and unlimited shots at each distance if possible but might have to get adjusted if we are going to try to get all distances tested. Most members want electronics rather than pulling. The only way we can get back to that is to have a full test of the system. We request as many FO calibers as possible come shoot. If we only prove it with 308 and 223 and then go to a match where the fast steppers wont read, we will be back to square one.

Mark W is the MD for the weekend and will be running registration and squadding.

Kirby M and I are the RSO’s

Mike S will be their to sell memberships (and renewals) and shoot cards. PLEASE Cheques if possible. If you want to pay cash, bring exact change as we ARE NOT equipped to make change. Think of this way, we will take more but the extra will be considered a donation to the club.

Dave H will be assisting setting up your devices as the new system has all new addresses and possible some different features.

Bring your electronic keys. Most have been wiped and will have to be reprogrammed that Saturday.

At the end of the day, one of three things will happen for Sunday. If all gets proven and works well, we will have a 700, 800, 900 metre electronic target match on Sunday with match fees (not if you have a shoot card) with medals and awards. Second option is that if new electronics don’t prove fully reliable, the match Sunday will be on paper with manual targets. Third option is that if not enough members stick around Saturday and complete the testing at all ranges, we would be forced to continue with a testing day Sunday, so please come out Saturday and if possible stay until all distances are thoroughly tested and proven so we can have a real match on Sunday. The decision for Sunday will be made by the executive at the end of Saturday.

Thank you to all members for coming out Saturday and testing. At the AGM many of you asked what you could do to help the club. This is your chance to get practice, work out the winter kinks, come ups, and help the club become better.

As always, weather decisions will be made Thursday night. If you don’t receive and email from Jay cancelling due to weather, it is game on.

Please send this to anyone you know who regularly shoots but is not a member on the master email list.

Good luck and good shooting in our 2019 season!

Bile,
I had the AFRA Match Committee respond to your question on scheduling:

Folks
The AFRA match committee spends a lot of time each winter trying to figure out match dates that work best for our registered members and regular competitors.

Over the past years our members asked if we could avoid long weekends, Father’s Day, Mother’s Day and any other recognized holidays so they could spend them with their family’s.

This limits us greatly when we try to schedule a match for every second weekend over our short summer shooting season.

I cannot speak for any other clubs but it would not surprise me if they have the same thoughts.

Personally for those of us who would shoot every weekend, anywhere we can, it will always have overlaps and weekends to sit around thinking about shooting.

We sure hope you make some of the AFRA matches as we welcome all guests.

Best of luck with all of your 2019 matches!

AFRA Match Committee

May 4/5 Match Cancelled Due to Weather/Snow Conditions

Our President and Vice President were at the range today and advised that with the snow on the ground and the snow falling the range is impassable this weekend.

To members, please forward this email to anyone who you know who might be planning to travel to the match.

More info on the next match to follow next week.

I’m really interested in coming out to the New Shooter day on June 8 , is there anything I need to do prior or do I just show up on the day ?
Also where is the location of the range that this event is held at ?

AFRA May 25th & 26th Match

To all AFRA competitors:

This weekend was scheduled to be an all 900m weekend. Due to the desire of the executive to test the upgraded electronic target system, Saturday will be 2+15 at 300, 600, 700, & 900m. Sunday will go 3 times at 900m. This will also allow shooters to work out there come ups at the first match of the year.

If the electronics do not perform to satisfactory levels, we will revert to manual. Please bring your electronic devices.

Please bring exact change or cheque’s for memberships and match fees. This will be the last chance to buy a shoot card for the season.

Kirby M is the MD and Rick S and Joe P will be the RSO’s. At this point we plan to go ahead regardless of weather.

Please forward this email to any shooters who are not members.

Bring your rifle and ammunition - know your elevation come-ups for the distances. A shooting mat and rear bag will help. A clipboard, pen, water. We'll put you through through some match like conditions at 400m and 800m, with 2 convertible sighters and 10 rounds on score at each distance. Bring extra rounds if you need help getting on paper.

... forgot to mention ... no muzzle brakes. As much as you can operate in your own 'cone of silence', those shooting beside you do not appreciate the additional shot waves and/or debris. For the calibers that are shot in competition (max. 8mm), this is not an issue. FYI

AFRA June 22/23 Palma Match Cancelled Due To Weather

To all AFRA members and guests:

The executive of the club discussed the terrible weather forecast for the next week and have collectively decided to cancel this weekend’s match.

Please share this information with anyone you know who is not a member and might be planning to travel.

See you all in a couple weeks.

AFRA Welcome to summer match July 6th & 7th 2019

To all AFRA members and welcomed guests:

Normally if you do not get an email all is good to go.

However due to the weather we are having here we will make an exception.

Many members have called or emailed with questions about the weekend. Max A is the Match Director for the weekend and we just had a discussion that we are going to attempt to challenge the weather and go forward. No guarantees that we will pull this off but after cancelling two matches on weather, collectively we have decided to try to get this one in.

For members travelling, this is just a warning of unsettled weather.

Please share this email with non members in case they are wondering.

AFRA Provincial Matches September 6th, 7th & 8th of 2019

To all F Class Shooters in Canada and the USA:

Once again we are very proud to host the AFRA Provincial Championships on September 6, 7, and 8th of 2019 at our World Class Homestead Range in Kananaskis Country, Alberta. As promised earlier, here is the update on camping restrictions.

All ranges are in metres.

Friday is 2+15 at 300, 600, and 900m for Lt. Governors match. Saturday is 2+15 at 400, 500, 600, and 800m. Sunday is 2+15 at 300, 700, 800, and 900 m. Saturday and Sunday are the Provincial Championships.

We will have three classes. TR, F-TR, and F-O. All will be shot on electronic targets so a compatible device will be required (e.g. iPhone, tablets or laptop PC’s). For shooters that have a disability we have 2 benches at each distance. Please advise at sign in if you are going to need a bench.

For AFRA members it is $40 for the weekend (included in your annual shoot card if you have one). Non members the cost is $60 for the weekend.

Please be advised that if you are not a member of a recognized PRA or DCRA there is a $5 per day insurance charge.

The main purpose of this update is to inform competitors that the Alberta Government has confirmed we have been issued 6 permits for dry camping on the AFRA site. The first 6 campers that email afratargetshooters@gmail.com requesting that you would like to reserve a spot will be booked and a email will be sent confirming your reservation. Those six campers will get the Kananaskis camping rules. Dry camping, no hookups, no fires etc. We do have outhouses on site. Anyone showing up without a camping reservation unfortunately cannot be accommodated.

HOWEVER, 15 minutes away is the Sibbald Lake Campground that can be booked online at the Alberta Government website.

For those who would like something else, the closest hotel is the Stoney Nakoda Casino and Resort on the corner of The Trans Canada #1 And highway 40. About 25 minutes from the range.

Also there are numerous hotels in Canmore, Cochrane, and the West side of Calgary.

Please book your spot and come out and enjoy our 5000 foot altitude range with swirling winds that leave our regular competitors scratching there heads.

There is no need to pre-register. We will adjust to accommodate all shooters that show up.

Good luck and great shooting!

Sent with best regards from Joe P.

AFRA 2019 Alberta Provincial Rifle Match Sept 6th, 7th & 8th

To all AFRA members and welcomed guests,

A reminder that we will be hosting the Provincial Championships on the dates above at our AFRA Homestead Range in Kananaskis.

This is the only event that we do not cancel regardless of weather as many people travel long distances to get here to compete. Anyone can choose not to compete if the weather gets too bad. The only thing that could stop it is if the weather gets so bad that the electronic targets wont function. Please remember to bring a tablet or device to connect to the Wi-Fi to read scores.

Course of fire will be:

Friday: 2+15 at each distance of 300, 600, and 900 m. (6 + 45).

Saturday: 2+ 15 at each distance of 400, 500, 600, and 800 m. (8 + 60).

Sunday: 2+15 at each distance of 300, 700, 800, and 900 m. (8 + 60).

Registration is from 8:00 to 8:30. Safety meeting at 8:45. Shooting starts at 9:00 AM sharp

Fees as follows:

AFRA members with a shoot card: Included with the shoot card.

AFRA members without a shoot card: $40.

Non-AFRA members who belong to APRA, BCRA, SRA or any provincial Rifle Association that has insurance for members: $60. Proof of membership is required at registration.

If you do not belong to any of these, there will be a $15 extra for insurance.

Please bring exact cash or cheque as we WILL NOT have a float and cannot make change. If you only have large bills, the extra will be considered a donation to the club.

For any competitors who have not been to our range, please go to the Alberta Provincial Rifle Association website where you can find a map. Please also look at the AFRA (Fullbore) page as well.

As mentioned earlier in the year, we have 6 dry/primitive camping permits for the event. Please contact the afratargetshooters@gmail.com to reserve. We will make access available Thursday evening and departure Monday noon latest. Please note, there are NO SERVICES and dumping of black or grey water is strictly prohibited.

Closest provincial campground is about 20 minutes away called Sibblald Flats Recreation Area. Alberta Recreation website gives details. Only advanced booking is allowed at this site.

The closest hotel is the Stoney Nakoda Casino and Resort on the corner of Highway #1 and #40. It is about 30 minutes from the range. Next closest hotels are in Cochrane and the West End of Calgary. 1 hour away from the range.

I have been told that the weekend MAY have a 100 km run from Kananaskis to Calgary that weekend so please allow extra travel time if this is the case.

Please forward this email to any non-members across Canada that you may know of. If you are reading this on CGN, please forward the link to your shooting friends If you have any questions, please contact afratargetshooters@gmail.com.

Good luck and shoot straight!
