Most Accurate Inexpensive .22's?

At my age.... I'm starting to enjoy shooting .22lr(easier on the joints, etc.) When it comes to .22lr rifles I prefer bolts.
My current 2 favs are a beautifully restored Shultz&Larsen and MKII TR. Both different looking bolts (Classic blue metal/wood with peeps vs "Tactical" looking and scope). Both shoot tight groups fairly consistently using bulk CCI SV ammo.
I'm not searching for ultimate accuracy (at least not yet) so both these rifles satisfy my needs. I also kept a scoped jw15 Backpacker for walking in the woods. It happens to be surprisingly accurate too!
The 3 mentioned rifles were found on the EE......

So from your experience the cheaper Savages do shoot similarly to a CZ 452? I was afraid of being disappointed with 1" groups at 50 yards with a savage and decent ammo, when a 452 does 1/2" with ease.

That would depend on one's standards, abilities, and the ammo used. In my experience, they are OK and the odd one is exceptional. I out shot them regularly with a Nork JW15; now that rifle was as accurate as my 452 and 455. No new ones to be found lately.

Not all CZ 452's do 1/2" with ease or consistency. If they did there would be a whole lot of them qualified on the 1/2" challenge thread. Those with very good barrels have a chance to do it, but not every CZ 452 will have a very good barrel.

I am thinking that after your CZ 452 Lux and 452 American experiences that the next logical step would be to an Anschutz of one variety or another. I am pretty sure that is where I will head after giving my second 452 (one varmint now an american) a little range time.

By far the most accurate 22 I've ever owned (and still do) is a CIL 310 I found at my LGS for around $300. It came with an older 4-12x scope and it will regularly put 5 shots into an inch at 100m on a calm day. If you could find one of those rifles I'd snatch it up

That’s an Anschutz-made rifle based on the 64 action.

For what it's worth I have a savage TR as my silhouette gun. Using lapua standard plus I was consistently 3/4" at 100yds. It really didn't like Eley much and wouldn't go below 1 1/2" - 1 1/4" IIRC. Haven't shot it in a while though. This is kinda making me want to go dig it out.

That said I recall it had a bad casting on the sear which required some work. An aftermarket trigger didn't help so I had to look at it closer and that's when I noticed a rough casting on a matings face causing creep. Really don't recommend an after market trigger for the Savages. It eliminates the accu trigger safety and in a Mark 2 slamming the bolt down with set them off without it.

Cheapest real 'accuracy' I have ever owned was Norinco NS522 if you can find one, most people don't sell them. Otherwise Savage FV-SR is a decent shooter. But as stated already by many people just a couple bricks of good target ammo will costs more then the rifle itself. I pay as much or more for top tier .22 ammo then I do to reload .223, 9mm etc.

I agree with the statements above that .22 ammunition is the limiting factor with most rifles. I have a Savage model 64 semi-auto that is surprisingly accurate with the cheapest available ammunition. I've also shot a Savage MKII with Accutrigger that seemed to be shooting laser beams. My Savage 64 was $150 on sale at CT and once I found ammunition that fed reliably it's a great shooter. You need to make sure the action screws are torqued properly on these. The trigger leaves something to be desired but for the price I am very impressed. It's certainly a cheap rifle and feels that way but Savage put the money where it counted because the thing is accurate.

CZ 453. No idea why they discontinued them. Inexpensive and mine is by far my best shooter with eley or sk match ammo. If I had only ever shot federal or CCI ammo through it, I would think it was a dud. Ammo can make all the difference in the world to a .22

Operative word is "inexpensive" ... sure there are more accurate rifles and better ammo ... but they are much much more expensive

^Agreed, I've said that dozens of times. However, it's the first time I've ever heard someone say a CZ 453 is an inexpensive gun. lol They might have been reasonably priced new/back in the day, but on the used market (the only place you find them now) I see some very hefty asking prices. As long as used 452s are around under $600, there is hope for us all. :)
