Hey, just wondering what you guys have been using to break in your MK12s? I've only taken it out once and just had some cheap federal target load and it didn't want to cycle more than 2 or 3 in a row before it would fail to eject. I'm hoping once it's broken in it will cycle with the cheap stuff for playing around shooting trap.

Buckshot & slugs, then heavy hunting birdshot, then a cleaning & light stuff...

Then Turkey Loads...

Cheers
Jay

1. Disassemble and remove all lube from the gun and reassemble. No need to use degreasing agents. Just rag off the components.
2. Use A) about 75 high powered loads like buck or slugs or B) use about 150-200 light loads. Cost will be about the same. A simple matter of choice.
3. Disassemble and clean all components. Expect lots of metal debris. Don't be alarmed. You were running the gun dry to break in the high surfaces on faying parts.
4. Reassemble lubed up as you would any other gas operated semi shotgun.

This method caused many more stoppages (jams) than running lubed. However running lubed will make the break in time much much longer. Forcing you to endure jams for outing after outing until you will ultimately sell it in frustration.

Took mine out for first time today.

First 5 were fail to eject with cheap Winchester 7 1/2 target load

Next 25-30 shells were essentially pump gun, required bolt rack between shots

31-40 started getting repeated shots turning into strings of 3-5, stoppages being stove pipes. Also a few not locking back on last shot.

~ 41-100 ( ran out of ammo) she ran flawlessly on a mixture of the cheap Winchester and 2 boxes of Challenger 7 1/2 target shot.

I popped it open for a look and did see some of the metal shavings/debris mentioned by Moe.

Very fun gun once it starts functioning properly,

I broke in mine a few days ago
had already stripped/cleaned lubed when bought before I read this thread, so I took it down and wiped it out with blue shop towels before I did the break in.
ran this thru it.
15 rnds win 3" slugs
45 rnds win 2-3/4 slugs
ran pretty good up to this point.
then ran 15 rnds 2-3/4 rem slugs
was starting to get misfire/light primer strikes.
switched to 40 rnds of Dominion "low power slugs"
and was getting all sorts of light strikes and failure to load next round.
So I figured that was enough and it was gunked up.

Took it home to clean it and wow was it grungy, super gunked up.
After a thorough, clean & lube,
went back to the range the next day
and ran 100 rounds of dominion low power slugs (slugs only at our indoor range) and
it ran flawless. Super fun.
tried the UKZON 10rnd "pump only" mags and they worked good but wouldn't strip the 10th round.
I think it is just an adjustment to the spring tension...easy fix I hope.
I will get it outside and run 100 target 7-1/2 shot rnds thru it soon.
Just need a few days for my shoulder to rest...a bit sore! lol

So far I am loving this gun and plan to run it in my first 3-Gun match in 2 weeks.

What was super gunked up? The piston etc? I had issues after a few hundred rounds and sent mine back. Curious is there lots of wear on the hammer buffer or bolt release?

Dang. Im 150rounds in with 3" #4 shot n im still getting some jams, either ftf or fte with 2 3/4 target loads. Its improved a bunch from new but still not 100% reliable. Will try a couple more boxes next weekend n see how it goes.

Have you been breaking it in wet and cleaning it after each outing?

I believe you can now get the light load gas blocky-whatchamacallit. Might be from Odell's. I've got it and the thing cycles light loads no problem and heavy loads at light speed.

Mine came with the "light loads" gas bushing installed. It wouldnt cycle 2-3/4 target rounds at all when new. 3" no issues 100% cycling. Now with 150nof those through it every 2nd or 3rd try itll bang of a 5 round mag without missing but next one i try itll hit 2 then fail agian. Slowly improving for sure. Biggest problem now is with all this Covid bs going on the local cantire is all sold out of cases and strangely enough single 25 round boxes have doubled in price. Wth🤷

I wouldnt say real wet, but yes cleaned after every outing and wiped down with light oil.

Just break it in dry man. Will (would have) save you a lot of time.

Is there a good place to buy replacement gas system springs for Turkish shotguns? I used to have different springs for different 1911 45ACP loads, I wonder if that would work for shotguns?

Nice birds Jay.

Nice birds! What choke were you using when you got those? I'm thinking of picking up a Mobile turkey choke for my MK12, but if I don't need one, then I'm happy..

And hi from Ottawa :)

Thanks guys, BUT I only shot the bird I am holding in the pic with 1&7/8oz of #6 lead at about 25 meters. (Federal Turkey Load, Turkey Thugs going 1210fps) using the full that came with the shotgun. I did NOT shoot both birds!

I then picked up a turkey choke from Al's Corner Store in Arnprior. The ONLY one that fit was the Carlson's Long Beard XR .650 Turkey Choke. I don't know what is up with the choke threading BUT FITTING ONE is a pain and I would suggest trying it BEFORE buying! I also picked up Winchester Long Beard XR Lok'd and Lethal 1&3/4oz of #6 shot. They say this will deliver a 10" circle @ 40 yards!

Not sure what is going to happen this turkey season with the pandemic... I already spoke to my buddy & told him I was going to pass on the season as we can't share a blind or drive to the spot together. I'm a turkey newbie, so I was relying on him for a spot etc and I didn't want to affect his season.
