Which do you prefer? I've got a XD40 and I'm very happy with it but I'd like to get a 9mm and with some of the bargains showing up for the M&P they're looking mighty good! TC

Had both....the M&P wins hands down.
I've had every 'tupperware' pistol known to man, and the M&P is the best one...(in 40 S&W that is!)
In 9MM or 45ACP, it may be a toss up.
I have, and love, my Glocks....9MM (G19/17) as well as a 45ACP (G21)...
BUT, having put a few rounds downrange with my M&P (40S&W), I also would be tempted to pick up one up in 9MM as well.
As with all of these threads, it's all down to personal preference...grips/sights/trigger, etc.
I had an XD9 and didn't have any real issues with it, but hated the grip safety.
If you haven't had an M&P I would recommend it highly...if it doesn't 'float your boat', you can always put it up on the EE!

I've owned XD's in both 9mm and .45ACP and own or have owned M&Ps in 9mm, .40 and soon to own an M&P in .45acp. And I agree with foxbat, for me the M&P is the hands down winner.

They are both really great guns, but I find the M&P to just plain feel better in my hands. Also a point of some consideration, S&W has warranty service in Canada and has no problem shipping parts to you up here. While Springfield only does warranty services out of the US and refuses to sell XD parts to the public.

Have both and love both, but if forced to choose I also would deem the M&P the winner. It feels and points great. I for one have no problem with the trigger. My M&P .40 was dead accurate out of the box. Very nice to shoot.

I have just purchased the M&P 9mm

It was a toss up for me between it & the XD, however as other ave mentioned the feel of the M&P was just so much more comfortable & natural in my hand.

Can't wait to shoot it this week .....

RRodger > Frontier taxidermy has great prices on them, good guys to deal with also

But what about those M&P mags. They fall apart when they hit the ground?

Sort of but not quite..... The first generation of the 10 round 9mm mags would weaken and break with repeated dropping on concrete floors. I have never heard of, or seen, them breaking from dropping on the ground. S&W seems to have addressed this issue by beefing up the lugs on the plastic bottoms on their newer mags.

I don't own XD but I do have M&P and have to say I really like it.

If 4in XD models were availabe maybe I'd be interested in one, but 5in 'Tactical' just never appealed to me; WAY to large and ugly. Not a fan of the grip safety either...

I don't know about 'ugly', I think they're ugly in a good way, but as for 'way too large' they are 8 inches overall length, the same size as a browning high power, but lighter. I believe the M & P is a half inch shorter. My XD has given me no reason to buy another pistol, and I've been looking for an excuse. :D

I have a .40 XD that I have been using to shoot IPSC Standard. I like the gun but I have 2 things that I'd like to work on for IPSC shooting. The take up on the trigger is too long for my taste and the sights are little big for those long shots at B zone targets. These little gripes may or may not also be found in the M&P but I'd check that out before buying. For regular target shooting and farting around at the range the XD is great. I've put 1800+ rounds through mine and only had one stoppage - It was this weekend using my first batch of reloads. Don't know what happenned but I think that one stoppage in 1800 rounds is pretty darn good... I have also shot an M&P in .40 but not enough to have a really solid opinion. I do remember the muzzle flash from the M&P was worse.
I have an M&P in 9mm coming this week. Will post back when I play with it...

Final thought...when I bought the XD it was a toss up between the the XD and the M&P. Check out the cost of extra mags. The M&P's were $100.00 at that time. That cost and the fact that some have reported broken mags turned me off from the M&P.

I have an XD 40 with 15,000 or so rounds through with no problems. Easily my favorite pistol.

I don't own an M&P 40 (yet) but have fired one. I really liked the feel. And my wife liked that it comes with a small grip insert.

I will buy an M&P but, my XD still IMO has the edge.

Thanks for all the replies. It looks like I'll have to toss a coin or hopefully get a chance to shoot one. The really humorous thing about all of these replies is a few years ago when the XD first came out you could replace the M&P in my post with XD and the XD with Glock and the replies would be the same :) TC

Keen observation....
All it really indicates is 'the better mousetrap' continues to evolve.
It has taken a long time for the various manufacturers to improve on the Glock.
It's pretty strange to think of Glocks as the 'granddaddy' of 'tupperware' pistols, but that's the deal.
As much as I really like the XD/M&P/Steyr, etc., I have chosen to make my two WITSHTF guns Glocks...in 9MM!:D

Service will be the key, SW has a reputation of looking after the customer. For the XD you must ship it back for repairs. I liked the XD when it came out, but quickly forgot about it when I held my first M&P.
