I don't have the receivers yet, but figure I might as well get all my parts together now, so I'm ready when the time comes. I've never done a build before though, so could use some recommendations for components and places to buy them.

Barrel:
I'd like to go 18.6" with some kind of black finish. Does not need to be match grade. I'd be more than happy if it was 2 MOA capable with good ammo. For profile, I definitely would like to keep it fairly light, but not pencil profile. I'll likely be shooting mostly cheap 55gr stuff, so I'm guessing 1:8 or 1:9 should be good? Will also be shooting 5.56. What chambering should I go with?

Gas system:
Mid length is what I'm after. What would you recommend for a gas block? Besides the tube and block, is there anything else I'll need?

BCG :
Not looking for anything crazy here. Decent quality mil spec.

Buffer/spring:
What would be the ideal buffer/spring for the 18.6 with mid length gas system?

Trigger:
Not looking for an expensive match grade trigger, but would like some kind of drop in trigger pack that doesn't involve messing with a bunch of small parts/springs.

Is there anything else I need?

Thanks.

Talk to International Barrel they are just down the street from you, run by Ryan Stacey if any body knows about accuracy and barrels around here it is him, with 18.5" barrel I would recommend going with a rifle length gas system and a standard weigh buffer, it just cycles so smooth with that combo.

for a good a MIL spec BCG, Stag Arms are great at a decent price, Arms East is the Stag distributor in Canada, you can also get a set of ALG or Geissele G2S trigger depending on how much you want to spend from them at the same time.

Never heard of them, but I'll check out International for sure.

Another member PM'd me also recommending the rifle length gas system. I just figured rifle length was more for the 20" barrels and didn't want an excessively long handguard, but apparently the rifle length is sub 15" so I think it should do the trick. What would you recommend for a low profile gas block? Should it be adjustable?

if you are only shooting common off the shelf ammo, which was formulated for rifle length gas systems anyways, you don't need an adjustable gas block and any low profile block would be fine.

Rifle length would be my choice for sure

When I build it will be a 18.6" barrel with rifle length and a long enough handguard to cover the gas block because I like that look. There are many examples out there that use a shorter handguard which doesn't cover the gas block though so its personal preference.......

Has anyone here tried this barrel? ^^^

Mine just showed up and it's even thinner than I expected. Rifle will probably handle like a dream, but I think I'll probably try to find something a little bit heavier.

Here it is next to the S&W M&P barrel.

Heavier for the weight or for the extra rigidity / consistency?

I have that 18.6” Faxon barrel. I’ve put 300 rounds through it. Saw ~2 MOA groups @ 100yds. Fairly consistently. A little concerned about how many rounds it can stand, in short order, before that group size will be adversely effected. I did get it quite hot though and it seemed fine. The lightweight is excelllent though. Feels just as handy as my 16” gov profile.

Right on, thanks.

I'm pretty excited to experience it for myself.

So I purchased almost everything I need to complete the build. The only thing I haven't bought yet is the buffer tube/receiver extension, buffer spring, and buffer. I don't know enough about it yet.

For an 18.6" barrel with rifle length gas system, do I need the longer 7 position tube, or can I get away with the standard 6 position?

What size/weight of buffer will I want to get? A5, H, H2, H3, etc?

Will the spring I need to get be dependent on the buffer, or are springs pretty standardized?

I'd like this thing to function as reliably as possible. What are you guys using for 18.6" bbl with rifle length gas system?

Carbine length tube are all the same length, the number of positions means number of different length you can extend your sliding stock to. spring again it is pretty much the same, for a 18.5" barrel with a rifle length gas system a standard "H" marked buffer will do.

I highly recommend the PWS enhanced buffer tube with ratcheting lock nut. It’s available directly from Brownells. Some site sponsors might also carry it, but not likely in stock. Check with RDSC, or CTCS. As mentioned, any “H” buffer will work fine.
